This is the fella we have - got pressed into service today to clean the windows and the French doors and did a fantastic job.

As an experiment, I also thought I would try its carpet cleaning prowess on a stain that was on our living room carpet (been there since moving in, no idea what it was) - - note the was in that statement, as the steamer removed it where our carpet shampoo machine failed.

@"M" why did you have to put it on a tray - did it leak or something?

I haven't found storage to be an issue either to be honest, as this one is about the same size as a bucket, so it tucks away in the outhouse quite well.

We have a vax steam mop which is great, and I bought on Thursday a bissel hand held steam cleaner with all the necessary attachments. Very good indeed!

Great job on your carpet stain, FC :dbgrtmb:
Er ... because I'm a good girl and do as I'm instructed? :dunno:
Or, because of these "Safety Rules" in the manual for my wheelie steamer:
        • Ensure ... placed on a flat level surface ...
        • Always protect areas beneath the boiler
        And this:

"The heat generated by the boiler unit can mark carpets, soft furnishings, table tops, cabinets etc.
To prevent this we recommend placing the unit on a wooden board, tray or other barrier - making sure it will not slip off one side or tilt during use
        ."
See? I'm a good girl I am. *insert halo smilie* :wub2:

Oh and its an "EarLex" wheelie style steamer and looks like this (but, doesn't have any ... wheels )

Mind you, I'm glad you made me look out the instructions for that model once again because now I can quote:

"Sterilising Soil" (using the steam plate) 2 - 2.5 minutes on the soil in seed trays!
"Killing Weeds" (using the steam plate) 1 - 1.5 minutes to kill weeds on paths and patios

Must remember to mention the point about weeds when I instruct encourage Mr "M" into using it for deep cleaning the chook and quacker units :heehee: He'll be so thrilled that it is multifunctional

I'll do the soil sterilising myself: he's good, but, he's not *that* good at following instructions :nonofinger:

As for the storage issue, that is really simple:
The 9 in 1 slips easily into a small void in my kitchen and takes up far less space than a bucket.
The EarLex is stored in its original box so all the attachments (and hose) can be kept neatly. The outhouses have other functions ... although, thinking about it, now I've bequeathed it to Mr "M", it still needs to be stored in on of the outhouses
But, at least my 9in1 is a mere slip of the hand away :blue thumb:

See above!!! (So chuffed with myself that I can actually answer one of *your* queries! :hapfeet:Kristen ) :heehee:

Ah, a quick Google suggests that it would appear that the Earlex is bigger than the wee Vax - mighty fine bit of kit though, the Earlex; they have been in the steam business a long, long time; I remember their wallpaper strippers being used by my dad and his fellow decorators, and that was when I was a kid.

Trust me, that steam cleaner can take artex off a ceiling at 50 paces! :hate-shocked: Haven't tried it on wallpaper but I bet it would do that without blinking.

Hmm, maybe I ought to retract my generous offer to Mr "M" and squirrel it away for those chunkier tasks? (He'll only use it upside down otherwise :wallbanging: )

Its certainly worth keeping tabs on I'd say - maybe rent it out to Mr "M" for an agreeable fee -- nice box of chocolates, or bouquet of flowers as the bare minimum of course....

A few years on since this thread was started. So, any updates for me please as I'm considering buying a steam cleaner?

We're still happy enough with ours @Sheal, although we don't use it as much as we initially did.

I presume the novelty of seeing what it would clean has worn off? :) I want to use it mostly for rugs and carpets. I've had three upright shampooers none of which worked properly and two of which were Vax's. I bought the upright's because of back issues.

Ours comes out for regular (like every 6 months!) cleaning of our stone floor, it really does lift off the grime. No other cleaning method works. It also gets used for odd jobs, it's very handy when something stubborn needs to be shifted. Wouldn't be without one.

I got a vax steam mop thing with handheld compartment in the middle.. don't use it as often as I should but it's pretty good at cleaning my rugs, laminate and tiles. Only grumble is the water tank is on the small side and the handheld thing tends to squirt water sometimes. Whatever you buy, buy extra cleaning pads. Not attempted the oven with it, mainly cuz I'm too lazy.

Yeah, its still good for the likes of the bathroom, tiles etc and occasionally the oven, but we don't use it on carpets or rugs mainly because we went for a Bissell Pro-Heat cleaner a couple of years ago, which is the dogs dangly bits (vastly superior to the Vax piece of poo that went before it). I still say they are worth having, but not so sure that I would spend £100 on one again.

Thanks all, I'm now wondering which way to go, steam or shampooer. I think I'll have to go and way up the pro's and con's in a shop.
