Hi Kandy I will send you some by Owlmail :D But please be careful where you plant them they have the tendency to run amok everywhere mine are in a separate spot surrounded by a wall so they can,t escape.they grow on railway banks, river banks round here, they really spread very fast. [IMG]

    Hi Kandy
I shall do so when the plants seed. One of the reasons I think it is not V. O. is that it has never seeded anywhere in our garden - and almost any plant seed seems to grow with no trouble at all in all our beds.

I'll keep checking as per your very informative description and shall keep posting photos.

    Thanks [IMG]

I'm still working on it and shall take some more photos soon.

Woo, your picture shows smooth edged leaves whereas mine are serrated.

Latest suggestion is Pimpinella Major Rosea. The flower looks very similar and the leaf shape appears similar but the description says the leaves are a dark glossy green.

I hope to post the photos by the weekend.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions :D :D

    Hi Everyone

More photos now but no seeds yet. The consensus still seems to be that it is Valeriana but it doesn't look like officinalis and I don't know what variety it is.

It has never self-seeded (officinalis is usually very rampant) but Mrs shiney saw it when she went on a garden visit recently but the gardeners there couldn't remember what it was. They also said it doesn't seem to sef-seed much and they usually pot the seeds up to get them to grow.

I had a sniff at the flowers when they were starting to open and they smelled very strongly of vanilla. Now that they are fully open they have very little smell.

What I find interesting about the flowers is that there are three flower stems to each head, each stem has its flowers form into a flat rectangle and then the three flower heads also form a rectangle.

Having seen the flowers, Shiney, I'm now totally convinced by the Valeriana officinalis ID. Looks completely like the ilustrations in my handbooks, and there is apparently some variation in colour and habit - e.g. the stalks are usually unbranched, but not always. Leaves look right, flowering period's right... I rest me case, m'lud!!

Hi, when it sets seeds, please can you photo some so that I can compare them with my plant? Or even just describe them, mine has seeds like lettuce but valerian I believe has seeds like dandelion.
