Very odd ... last week we thought all our storks came back ... they were in Algoz, in Silves amd back on our Modelo grocery store sign.

After a couple of days they were gone again. We were wondering if these were "transient" ones who take up temporary residence in the empty nests on their travels to South Africa ????

Then today we went by Portim£o and all the storks were there ... in fact, I saw two pairs circling over the bridge which was fantastic.

What are they doing? They are obviously all not leaving here to go to SA?

I think birds can take their time migrating, perhaps waiting for the right weather. Here in Shropshire we have very few house martins and swallows left. Down in Pembrokeshire last week there were loads of them just West of Haverfordwest. I wondered whether they were gathering together before moving across the Bristol Channel. In the past I have seen flocks gathering in September on the South coast of Devon. Impressive to see but I always find it sad.

Evening, geoff. I've fallen in love with these huge beautiful birds so I'm trying to learn a little about them. It is so wonderful to see them circling, two or three pairs at a time, quite low down ... naturally I never have the camera handy and am always in the car anyway! One day ...

Great pics Lol, Storks are appearing here in the UK less and less as they are declining as a breeding bird in the Netherlands due to drainage and develoment so less overshoot here.
At least we can see pics of yours.:)

Honestly, I could not believe this as we passed and t'other half turned Isabel around so I could jump out and take photos. The storks are not afraid of people and just sat there and looked at me ... it was just amazing with several pairs circling at the same time.

We have so many in Algarve now but Alentejo (the county above which we had to go through to get to Estradamura where Palmela is) has lots of them. I am fascinated by them and saw them walking in the wildflower fields but you can't have the camera at the ready all the time sadly.

glenw ... there is no smell except for the Eucalyptus and Acacias ...... heaven!

I'll share my storks with you guys as much as I can. xx

How did I miss these latest stork pics, I ask myself??

They are fantastic, Sis! I have never seen that many storks nesting all together like that. Just one nest per pole, roof, etc, but these ones obviously like to be near their neighbours. Perhaps there were not enough nesting places to be had and so they decided to share a large tree.

Whatever, the pics are amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Evening Sis. xx There must have been a dozen nests total ... you with your new camera and photography could REALLY do justice to our beautiful feathered friends we both love so much. :thumb:

If you guys come down here in the Autumn, we'll take you there, it's only hour. Actually would like to take you up to Palmela actually, only 2 1/2 hours ..... :)

Here are some more storks for your thread, Sis, lots of them. We couldn't count them all but we reckoned that there were at least 80 in this flock!

We were just about to pull into a gas station in Badejoz, Spain, when we saw this huge flock of storks. It was an amazing sight seeing so many of them at once.

What a sight Lol, love to have seen it.
Presumably they are gathering to cross to Africa (Gib? as they don't like crossing large expanses of water where there are no thermals).

Yes, I would love to have seen that too, strongy .... they are Sis's pictures.

I've only seen four pairs circling at one time, Sis, over the river at Silves. Lucky you to have seen this. :thumb:

Yes, I know. I couldn't believe my eyes at first. It was a pity they drifted away before I could get the camera set more or less right. Still, I am happy with the pics I did manage to catch.
