This 30 minutes before high tide. The weather has been rough today but we aren't getting the weather which caused the type of damage the Storm Surge did. It's actually been 'warm' here today, 11 degrees at lunch time.

Yes considering the time of year it is incredibly 'mild'....which makes all this even more freaky:rolleyespink:

The island has taken another battering today with more flooding from sea surge and gale force winds.

There has been damage to sea walls all round the island. This is Gansey Bay in the south. This bay is continually pounded and the sea undermines the wall, it is repaired on a regular basis.

I arrived at Whitby this morning an hour after high tide, and the water was about 2ft below the top of the harbour side. I've never seen it that high before, although obviously it has been higher, as Whitby flooded just before christmas.

Now for a rant:) Driving home tonight, over high exposed ground, car getting buffeted about with the occasional side swipe seeming determined to push me onto the wrong side of the road. Its dark too, the road surface is wet, and the road has an unpleasant accident statistic. So I decided that despite the 60mph speed limit, I'd stick to 50mph. Yet there were some people who zoomed right up close behind me, and tailgated for ages before finally overtaking. I don't mind people wanting to overtake if I'm going slower than they want to, but sitting on the back bumper for a couple of miles first in the hope that I'll speed up just for them... Some people must believe they are immortal.

If someone is tail gating me under those conditions I steer into the gutter to throw all the muck over their windscreens, they soon get the idea.

Not nice - it could coincide with a side gust and you are in danger of veering into that vehicle.
Anyway, glad your guardian angel was with you tonight Clue,
                      Jenny

On this occasion my guardian angel was me. I was driving to suit the conditions, and had both hands firmly on the steering wheel. If I'd decided to ignore the conditions and do 70 or 80 like some of them do, then it would have been much harder to stay in lane, and much, much harder to do anything about it if another vehicle had been blown off course forcing me to have to take evasive action.

I've lived on the island 21 years Yvonne and not seen anything this bad here. Yes, we get the stormy weather but have never had sea damage like this before.

I don't think I'll ever be classed as a northerner, not with my accent anyway! :heehee:
