The island has got off lightly compared to the mainland. There has been building damage around the island and the loss of trees yet again.

With the direction the wind came from I've been lucky. I've lost part of my carport roof and my dodgy greenhouse door managed to stay attached with the help of a baton. The wind is still high here so I will check everything out properly tomorrow. This morning we had a two hour plus power cut.

    Stay safe everyone!

Ours does that after storms. Got there one day, it had completely gone :yikes: It came back again though.

Whitby flooded yesterday. The sea came right over the harbour walls and flooded the lower parts of town.

            http://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/news/local/storm-surge-caught-on-camera-1-6300293

Going for my lunch time walk today was pretty sad. You see on the news people chucking away their carpets and stuff after a flood, and its sad, but today I actually walked down the street while people were doing that, and it makes it all the more real.

Considerable damage has been done on the sea front itself, with actual sea defences washed away, part of the promenade has just gone. I didn't think to look to see what's happened to the boats in the harbour.

I heard a little bit about Saltburn but not much. Redcar seems to have got off lightly, but either side of us got battered. No news seems to be coming from the villages yet. Staithes and Runswick probably got it bad, as both are nestled between two cliffs, making a perfect funnel for the sea to rage in.

The storm surge has been so great ...

... the "Guardian" newspaper reporter, Peter Walker, stated the Cinque port of Sandwich is [now] located in "North" Kent :hate-shocked:

Well, thankfully the night passed without any loss of life.

Many East Anglian coastal towns and villages suffered flooding during the night. At Hemsby on the Norfolk coast, a few properties were actually washed into the sea.

Apparently, the water levels in some places were actually higher than those of 1953, when many lives were lost. Since then, much improvement work has been carried out on coastal flood defences and of course, this time the storm surge was predicted well in advance, so evacuation plans could be put in place.

The general feeling in the area is that although many homes and businesses suffered flood damage and there was widespread disruption along the coast, it could have been much worse.
