News has emerged from Saltburn, which is just at the end of the same bay that Redcar is on.

There's a picture gallery in there. Looks like Saltburn got a battering. There are a couple of pics in there of a man's very, very lucky escape.

In the 21 years I've lived here I don't think I've heard anyone say the three lettered word knowingly. When mistakes have happened, people hold their collar and whistle, particularly those Manx born. Ringie is another popular word used here.

Although not superstition there are many other sayings in everyday use that only the people here really understand.

 

Same with Portland and Bunnies, considered bad luck.

Yes good point Jack, I hope that is the case and it's not somebody who hasn't been reported missing.
I think it's a blessing that more people weren't killed. Just looking at what has happened by me, with the tide coming 20-30 feet further in than normal, breaching sand dunes 15-20 feet high and the debris deposited, such massive tree trunks, and other heavy objects such as a Belfast sink, anyone caught off guard on path, would have been in serious trouble.
