They can't use records as the length of each dance is usually shorter than the original recording. In SCD all the dances for the competitors are pretty much the same length, to within a few bars. The musical director/arranger re-writes all the sheet music for each musician to cater for the shorter length of the performance. Using records could also means more copyright negotiations, which can be protracted.

The problem with the music in my opinion, isn't so much the band, but the choice of music.
The band are all very accomplished session musicians who are only given an hour or so to go through the diverse selection of music before the show. In the circumstances I think they do very well. In the past the BBC have blamed the dancers for the choice of music. This is unfair as they can only choose from a list of tunes given them by the producer.

The singers are expected to cover songs which occasionally can have too great an octave range. The "original artists" of course, had the advantage of all sorts of digital "help" when the recording was made.

Many more contemporary unsuitable "non ballroom dance tunes" are chosen in a pathetic attempt to attract younger viewers.

I appreciate what you say Doghouse ... but how is it that it works for Dancing on Ice using the originals? They have a time limit also for dancing and the same factors would be taken into consideration regarding copyright I would assume.

This is true, but what I've posted is what I've learned from posts made a couple of years ago on a message board, by one of the musicians in the band.

Thanks to everyone who wished me a good party! :)
Proper lol @ SussexG's post! Rowers are renowned for their reticence and self control when it comes to alcohol :D
I'll just say a fantastic evening was had by most!

The comparative fitness of professional dancers, rowers and cyclists was debated. Some of us have been taking ballet classes a few times a week (just the muscle conditioning exercises- not actual dancing!) and so the 'debate' got slightly heated, and hasty challenges were issued.

Intellectual topics which also came up:
    • how much botox was needed to get the celebs on the air,
    • who is going to cop off with their professional,
    • why dont they have older professionals on the show to dance with the older celebrities,
    • will Goldie's son be able to watch him from prison.

Also, I heard this is Brucie's final season?
    ---

Its half ten on Sunday, and Ive just managed to watch the show back properly without all the noise and distractions. Im in tears at Vincent Simone rubbing up and undulating against Ann Widdecombe in the group dance at the end.

Also I dont think I had fully appreciated the beauty of the new Russian dancer - he's a bit fit!

    Didnt Anne do well? :)

Matt Baker, Gavin Henson, Scott Maslen and PAmela Stephenson impressed.

    Michelle Williams disappointed.

The BBC has obviously a policy of trying to address the problem that the pro dancers are now more recognisable than most of the contestants, that's why Lilia was dropped this year. Expect other well known pro dancers to be dropped next.

I think that those who want to get rid of him are taking what started out as an enjoyable Saturday evening entertainment show for the whole family, far too seriously.

Ive been away for a couple of weeks with work and rather uninspiring training camp (thats the sports and not the Afghanistan variety) and so missed this :(

I have caught up on Iplayer and have allied myself with Team Pamela Stephenson.

Trivia for ye: Kara the annoying one from Eastenders is older than Tina, the annoying one from Coronation street by only 2 days.

Sorry Val but I am one 100% the other way. I don't like Bruce and his jokes are cringe worthy to say the least. Him leaving the show could not come soon enough for my liking.

    What amazes me

    Felicity born 1946
    Ann - born 1947
    Pamela - Born 1949

And Felicity is still so sexy and flexible .. makes me wish I was 16 years older.
