I must admit I daren't give blood either. Not for fear of needles though (although I don't like them), but just because I'm not at ease with losing a significant quantity of blood.

Logically I know its not an issue, because they wont take more than is safe to take, but last time I lost a significant quantity of blood was the day my mate inadvertently split my head open with a brick. The wallop hurt, but it was about half an hour later that I was most poorly. Dizzy and weak and suffering from a bout of amnesia that made me unable to remember my address, my dad's name, our home phone number etc. When we got to the minor casualty hospital my mate had to answer all the questions.

At the time, and for ever after until just now, I thought it was simply the loss of blood that had rendered my brain temporarily useless, but now I actually think about it, its kind of more likely that concussion from having an airborne house brick nearly fraction one's skull that did it.

Yes there are always one or two new donors and the staff are really good and used to helping. It obviously helps if you have someone with you to start with.

At my last company we had visits from a bloodmobile lorry and a group of us would go together, one colleague eventually joined us, he had a fear of needles that was preventing him going overseas (couldn't face up to the inoculations), so after a few donations he overcame it and now holidays abroad. I think the worry never goes away but there is the incentive of the free club biscuits and as many packets of crisps your conscience will let you consume :)

Easy for me to say I know, but there is no pain, the worst bit for me is pulling off the plaster afterwards (they will give you a bandage if you're allergic to them).

I'm not sure if I'd feel better with someone with me or not! I think the best thing would be to go and at least see what it's all about. I don't even know what blood type I am!

I'd really like to give blood too. The nearest thing I've done is signing all my organs away for donation when I die. :yahoo:

              They can have the lot!
