No doubt having parents who had been through the war and rationing had a considerable effect on how my generation were taught to appreciate food. If I overdid the butter on my toast I was informed in no uncertain terms that what was on the slice was the equivalent of a weeks ration for 4 people:rolleyespink:.Queue knife to scrape off the excess:). @"M" I did have to smile at your post
the exact phrase used when whole Kippers complete with eye were on the supper menu:yikes:

Baked hedgehog and rabbit stew was my staple diet, and elbows on the table(usually a wooden box) was a thick ear:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I remember being sent to the shop to find sugar in the shortage in the 70's :old:

Somehow they'd got hold of a load of German sugar, i'd never seen a kilo bag before, it was girt :hate-shocked:

My view is - explain the risks of eating too much sugar - and then respect the right of individuals to make up their own mind in light of these facts.

It's similar to smoking - smokers know the risks - it is their choice to accept these risks in exchange for the enjoyment they derive from a ciggy.

Adding 28p to a bottle of pop will not stop people - if they want the pop. Trying to restrict consumption will only generate greater interest. The 'Streisand' effect.

Mind you - it will generate around 250 million quatloos - which is going into the NHS coffers.

I think if people are honest with themselves they all know eating junk food, sweet cakes, fizzy drinks etc will make them more prone to illness and overweight etc.
We all like to eat whats meant to be bad for us but keep doing it. More TV people telling us that eating unhealthy foods in excess is bad for us wont change our habbits.

No boys were encouraged at my school either, but now I wish I was taught Cookery at school. I've been trying to understand how to cook and bake properly this last year but just don't know the basics. I have always done my fair share of cooking in the past just following recipes, anyone can do that without knowing what's going on. It's since I've been trying to bake sugar free bread and cakes that I realised I hadn't a clue what the different ingredients did, what temperatures and timings are needed. I do a lot of experimenting not always successfully.
