While on the subject and a sideline does anyone understand this modern craving for chocolate?
Some years ago it was just another sweet in the sweet shop.
We all liked a chocolate bar now and again.

Then something changed and it was stated that it has some effect on the brain.:snorky:

Since then it has been very trendy to say you love it or even crave it, gotta say, I like chocolate but it has no effect on me.

You also get similar strange people saying they cant get along without coffee, yeah I drink coffee, but it also has no effect on me.

Are people being brainwashed ? I tend to think they are, its the old placebo effect.;)

Got a mate at work who insists on decaf tea. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I think that there are a number of factors. One is autosuggestion but the others depend more on the individual body's reaction to the chemicals in coffee and chocolate.

There's no doubt that caffeine has a large effect. For some people caffeine is addictive but for others it just makes you pee more. Coffee has a fair amount of caffeine in it, depending on the strength of the coffee. Tea has a much lesser amount but for some it can still affect them. So some people have decaffeinated tea or coffee. For some of them it's just a fad.

Chocolate is another matter. As darker chocolate is now a lot more popular there is an increase in the caffeine concentration in it. In our younger days there wasn't really a lot of cacao (chocolate) content in a bar of chocolate. Dark chocolate was rarely much above 45% chocolate. Nowadays 70% is very popular and 85% is becoming more popular. There is about twice as much caffeine in what is now considered dark chocolate as there was in what used to be considered dark chocolate. Milk chocolate has about a fifth of the caffeine content of the current dark chocolate. White chocolate has almost on caffeine - but loads of sugar.

To complicate things they have now found that chocolate has more theobromine than they thought. The jury is still out on what effect that has but they're doing research into it.

Well, you did ask! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

It's the same old story though to me, people just consume more these days.

Eat too much of anything and it will affect you.

I keep being told to drink decaf tea every year by the doctor. It seems to have improved, at one time it tasted awful, maybe my taste buds are failing with age. Anyway it just doesn't slake my thirst like a proper cuppa.

It wasn't long ago we used to make a big pot of tea to share in the office, don't think decaf had been invented then.

You should give him ordinary tea pete and see if he can tell the difference

This is where it all goes silly, as far as I can work out there are different ways of decaffeinating tea or coffee.
Mostly based on altering what is basically a natural substance and probably altering why the drink was first considered worthwhile drinking in the first place.:snorky:

Funny you should say that, got the mugs mixed up the other day, neither could notice the difference when I asked.
But if you gave me decaf coffee I'm pretty sure I could tell, if it was real coffee and not instant.#

Most instant coffee is pretty rank, but I prefer it to tea made with different water to what I'm used to.
In short, only drink tea at home, everyone else's tastes strange to me.

Since giving up sugar I only eat 100% chocolate, it lasts much longer as no one else likes it :snorky:

                            It is just another tax....

Where does the money go I hear you ask ??????

Well the government withdrew the funding for the so called breakfast clubs for young underprivileged children....

They took this money away from essentially the poorest sector of society.

This is the very same government who among themselves claim 57 million in expenses for food and beverage. That’s right they took 28 million of underprivileged kids while the gorging pigs ( please excuse my terminology) scoff and drink 57 million quids worth between themselves.

                            Anyway back to the point.

The money raised from the sugar tax will be used to fund the re introduction of the breakfast clubs.

Remember .... We are all in it together. Yeh right.

One point re the sugar tax. Not everyone who enjoys a glass of full fat Coke or Pepsi is fat or needs to loose weight. But they pay anyway. Ahhhh maybe we are in it altogether..

                            Please excuse my rant..

I gave up drinking tea and coffee thirty years ago and would say that caffeine definitely has an effect. Just to see if I liked it now I tried coffee last year and halfway through I had to stop drinking because it made me 'hyper' and gave me the shakes. I've not touched it since.
