I had no apples last year either; came as a bit of a shock because the year before the tree was bending over backwards with the weight of them.

I'm hoping all this rain we've had will bring it's reward in tree fruits this year.

As the daughter of a Yorkshire woman, I can categorically confirm - as posted by shiney - y.puds go with *anything*.

It was the posh folk who could afford the beef to accompany their y.puds. Working class knew that the humble y.pud was a stomach filler; it was *not* served *with* roast beef. If roast beef was affordable (and it rarely was), then the y.pud would be served *before* the main dinner, with gravy, to fill people up so they didn't need quite as much meat on their plate.

Leftover y.puds made excellent dipping tools for soft boiled eggs too ;) If you had jam, they could be served with that as a dessert.

I recall, growing up, my mother served a full roast meal - with y.puds - and we all tucked in with gusto; it then occurred to me, where was the meat? :dunno:

My mother's response was: "It's a vegetarian dinner"

I've had that kind of meal many a time and enjoyed it heartily! (Including the 'leftovers' for brekkie the following day.)

            Mum,
I acknowledge your recollections of "the good old days" but would you now prefer beef with your Yorkshires?

            :heehee:
In truth? No. I would prefer chicken, or maybe pork; I'm partial to duck and a toad in the hole (but made with mushrooms and tomatoes instead of sausages).

The real question would be: would my mother have preferred beef with her Yorkshires? I think she would have said: yes, please!(And don't forget to save the dripping for some drippin&bread for supper :heehee: )

The reason mint sauce 'goes' with lamb is because the acids from the vinegar cut through the fat from the lamb; similarly with apple sauce and pork. I'm sure you already know that, Jenny, but it's surprising how many today do not. And while traditionalists will serve Yorkshires only with beef and bread sauce only with chicken, I like diversity. So, yorkshires with everything still rules :heehee: Except .... fish! Cannot imagine Yorkshires with fish :eeew: That really would be taking it too, too far. If not for the fact fish is cooked in batter and yorkshire pudding is ... batter! :roflol:

Things to try before you die:
A salted, flat-barm cake with beef dripping - and bacon with cheese if you like if it's a bank holiday!.

 Some of those are the Quorn lumps, roasted them in together with a bit of sea salt, olive oil & paprika.
