Not a close up one. I'll take one tomorrow when I'm at me moms.

Don't go out of your way. My gut feeling is that it's a Salvia coccinea hybrid - google that.

    Will do, thanks :)

While you're here... Is it possible to take cuttings off them at this time of year ( like Fuchsias ) to overwinter ? The Amistad is about 4' high and has loads of little shoots on it.

I have. The shorter daylight hours distress the cuttings less. Certainly a good idea to back Amistad up with a few cuttings here in the UK.

Here you go. The full sized leaves are about 3" long and heart shaped. There's very little scent, just a slight sagey one.

I've had a look and it looks like " Coral Nymph ". Have you grown this one ? I keep finding conflicting advice as to plant type. Some say annual some say perennial. It was labelled as a hardy perennial but with no name, just " Salvia ".

I must say that I am really becoming a bit of a fan of Salvias and they are beginning to take centre stage in my garden. I only have 3 of the shrubby Salvias, but certainly looking to add more.

Whats not to like, they flower their socks off, looks good, fragrant foliage and easy to propagate.

I've not grown any S.coccinea myself but don't expect it to be hardy.

                Thanks Longk,
I'll treat it like a Fuchsia then over winter. Luckily it's a nice bushy plant with plenty of new growth for cutting material.

I'm gonna be planting my Amistad and Neon tomorrow, do I need to plant them a little deeper ( like a hardy Fuchsia ) or just at a normal pot depth ?

Neon is a microphylla based hybrid/cultivar so as long as it's a good size with woody growth it will be fine planted normally.
Amistad is a hybrid (I think S.guaranitica is involved - @nibor probably knows) but depending on its size I would probably keep it protected this winter and plant out a little deeper next spring. I've never had one survive in the ground although I was trying over the winters of 2011/12 and 2012/13. Good drainage is a must.

Here's a seedling grown from seed collected from "Black and Blue" last year..................

Distinctly different to the parent plant but that could be because it is still a young plant or it could be that it will remain different next year.
