Are you supposed to fertilise Salvias for more flowers?

They're not greedy although a feed will never hurt. Dead-heading is better though.

      Hi everyone,
I have young plants ( growing well, around 6" high ) of S. Dolichantha, S. Jamensis and S. Nemerosa Carradonna in 3" pots.
My question is.... Should I plant them out in their permanent positions now or leave them until the spring.

      Thanks

Wait until the spring is my advice. However, if you have spares plant one of each out - a mild winter will not harm them and the roots will be established come the spring.

Here's a couple of Salvia that are just coming into bloom for me. The first is a real favourite from last year – Salvia urica..................

The performance of this plant this year is a measure of the summer that we've had. Last year they grew to almost two metres from seed but this year they have struggled to 80cm in the same positions.

I suspect that the next one is also suffering from the lack of daylight warmth and the cool nights that we've had this season. It has the gorgeous (:heehee:) name of Salvia SL411 and was grown from seed from Robin Middleton.................

As you can see from the photo below it has grown well and has all the makings of a nice annual or tender Salvia in a half decent summer.............

Sadly the buds are struggling to open properly now and I'm going to put it in the greenhouse at the weekend to see if it cheers up.

      Here are a few Salvia from the weekends visit the the Botanic Gardens in Oxford. Unfortunately the labels for many were buried in the growth;
Salvia confertiflora has done far better than mine. It's amazing the difference that a sunny spot in a walled garden in the city centre makes!

Salvia oxyphora is a firm favourite of mine despite being pink!

Salvia brevilabra is another favourite of mine...............

I thought that this was S.buchananii but the foliage looks wrong so maybe not..............

      Salvia coccinea maybe?

      Salvia involucrata..................

      Salvia fulgens maybe?

The one you thought might be S. buchananii is actually S. curviflora.

I like that colour Sheal. Which one is it or is it an unknown seedling ?

( PS... Nice to have you back, hope you had a good holiday :) )

I think it's Dolichantha, perhaps @longk can confirm that for me. :) I can't actually get to it at the moment it's smothered by this lot at the back of the bed. I can just about see the top between the Choisya and Taxus but not in this picture.

Thanks for the welcome, it was a good holiday, a lot achieved, but now we need another one!

I hope it is as I've got that one growing from seed for next year.

I've grown it from seed this year and I think it would have bloomed earlier but for the weather holding it back. :doh:If it's not Dolichantha it can only be Urica as they are the only two I have grown. :)

It is S.urica which is a tender annual. Should produce seed freely.
The flowers are actually darker than the photo aren't they?

Do you have a photo of the foliage?
