which one did you buy pete? tye species is supposed to be hard to grow. the hybrids are much easier. i had a couple outside for a few years but killed them moving them. took a while to find a good source of replacements

      Strongy,
I have recently returned from India and brought back some fresh Caesalpinia seeds. I put up an ID request last week which Silver Surfer correctly named for me.

I haven't had time to have a look at what's available yet and it's unlikely I will buy anything this year as I'm looking to move house. :)

Sorry Jenny, when I mentioned Pete's Caesalpinia it is different to the one you had seen. Caesalpinia Gillesii is almost hardy (well Pete's is) C. Pulcherima is sub Tropical and very difficult to grow here even in a greenhouse.

When I was repotting the Hedychium gardnerianum last spring I piled up a few old roots, that were in the middle of the pots, in a small heap on the allotment. I tend to keep the strong growing new stuff around the edges.
They stayed there all last summer bone dry, and all this last winter soaking wet with the odd light frost.

Moved them out of the way today and most have new shoots already, and although its fairly warm at the moment its not been especially warm up to now. DSC_0003 (3).JPG

A couple more which have come through the winter unscathed.

This Nerium oleander is totally damage free.

Apart from the fact it appears to be growing on its side:biggrin:

And an osteospermum, the bedding kind, left in a pot all winter.

@pete - it has certainly been a kind winter. My Nerium oleander is also unscathed, but my Lotus is shamed by yours!!!

At no time this winter did I feel the need to move any of the Iochroma that are still in pots in, nor my Sollya, triphylla Fuchsias (although they look tatty now) or a few others. The Hedychium that you sent me last year remained in the green all winter outdoors.
The only things in the shed were my Mackaya bella, an Impatiens niamniamensis, some Kalanchoe x houghtonii and a few other things like that.

I cut down my hedychium stems about a week ago, new shoots should be about to show.
                        Hopefully flowering ones.

The good news. Salvia Patens Cambridge Blue and Oxford Blue have come safely through the Winter. Sadly, not the pot - bloomin' girt crack all the way down.
Can I somehow stick it together with anything please?

When they go like that, pots that is Jenny, I usually put a wist of wire around the top just under the rim, twist it a few times with pliers and cut off the excess.

I've lost just one Salvia, a Patens cultivar called Blue Angel. Salvia elegans is just about to burst back into bloom again.
