Swallowing off!

    We had a load fly past the bedroom window early on this morning, heading south. I was already awake (bad night for pain last night), but they were loud enough to wake our dog.

    We get a lot of geese here , living near Martin Mere . I have looked out of the bedroom window and seen them flying up the street at 20 feet high- a great sight.
    But not seen many this year :scratch: Do they arrive in September / October from Russia and Canada ?

    They sure fly low around here @HarryS - our house is one of those built in the 50's with fairly low ceilings and therefore fairly low roof line, and they are often not that far above the houses. I often hear them rather than see them.

    I have no idea when they arrive from colder climes - much as I like to see them, my knowledge is pretty poor

    Centuries ago it was widely believed that swallows hibernated over winter at the bottom of local ponds, as illustrated in this woodcut showing fishermen retrieving them:
