I sowed sweeypeas staight into a patio pot and covered it with a plastic cloche.
When they were tall enough, I put up a wigwam of bamboo sticks to whit they climbed.
During their youth, I pinched out the tendrils, as this is supposed to encourage more flowers.

Just like to thank everybody for this discussion which I have followed with great interest. I love sweetpeas and have tried every which-way but up to grow them for a few years. No success, never even had a shoot. All your comments are great and helpful and I will no doubt try again next year. I'll let you know how I get on then.

I've planted some seeds now in peat pots, they have already germinated and will overwinter outside in a coldframe. I'll also plant more in the spring as insuarnce but normally overwintered ones perform well and give an early flowering.

I reckon nature knows best and the ideal time to plant hardy seeds is when they would ripen naturally.
