I mentioned a few months back, they've ruined the sherbet fountains by making them in plastic now.

Miraflores: yes, there's something about the packaging of Italian sweets which makes them particularly appealing.

I had a thing about bitter cherry boiled sweets. I always think of them whenever a group of cherry trees is in blossom in the local park - the flowers smell exactly the same as the sweets! Parma violets were weird but good. And those bright pink, soft candy shrimps were fun too. It's a wonder that any of us has any teeth left. :heehee:

They're being made to add a health warning from next month. In future sherbet fountains will show graphic pictures of horribly decayed teeth on the packaging along with the message: May Wreck Your Dental Health And Make Your Dentist Very Rich.

I broke a milk tooth on a Victory V. Now got 2 molars that have broken, but I don't think that was down to sweets. One false tooth due to a headbutt, but apart from that all the others are still there.

Just wish the last wisdom tooth would hurry up & finish coming out.

        * * * *

        Making Honeycomb.

Put a load of sugar on to heat & stir in a couple of tablespoons of golden syrup.

Have a load of greased stuff about, like tins, baking parchment etc.

Just as the sugar turns a very pale straw colour, quickly stir in a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda.

You'll need an extra pair of hands to help scoop the frothing mass into the tin.

Put it somewhere to cool, out of the reach of wasps & children.

Don't get it on your flesh unless you have a Napalm fetish.

Cut it up when cooler & coat in melted chocolate as it is hygroscopic.

Blimey! I didn't expect this thread to take off like it has, 'SWEET' memories I suppose. :)

Watergarden, I used to make candy floss for my children when they were kids, a messy procedure.

Ziggy, I remember when Mars bars were 4d let alone 6p and they were bigger with thicker chocolate then. I eat two a week now, am addicted.

Do you remember the jelly chews that were shaped as reptiles. Many years ago my dad used to by four a week and feed them to our two Jack Russells. He'd cry with laughter watching them trying to unstick them from there teeth. Cruel, but so funny. :heehee:

I've just retired from the sweet game...my brother still manufactures the old fashioned boiled sweets.
Sweets have been in my family for over a hundred years...and you would be amazed that so many of the oldies are still available if you know where to go.
