Sienna, I would wait a while before splashing out on aquilegias.
In time a new mildew resistant strain will prob be introduced but I think we are seeing a repeat of the devastation that destroyed impatiens a few years back. Nowadays, new strains of impatiens are available that seem resistant to mildew.
There are lots of new threats to our plants now....pests, viruses and diseases...so it pays to research what plants we want to grow in our gardens :)
Sienna, can you get back to us once you have contacted Carrie? I think it could be very helpful to us

You could always sow some in a seed tray and put it in a sheltered place rather than buying potted plants of what is a rather common plant, Sienna. If you have a Green House I would definitely sown a tray or two, or three......it's what gardening is all about. I live in West Cheshire, obviously further North than you, and we had not had any problems with disease.:dunno::snorky:

@ARMANDII no green house unfortunately :( we used to have a cheapie plastic walk in one which lasted a couple of years until the winds got it.
Hubby considering building a lean to at the side of the house which will make sowing much more of a possibility.
I have in the past managed quite successfully with a sunny bedroom windowsill but not a huge amount of space, so will have to be selective :)

Well, you might want to try a method that some members use, Sienna, that is one of the large clear/opaque Storage boxes [around a £5] or less if you've already got one!!:heehee: Sow the seeds in the tray, place it in that sheltered area I mentioned:heehee:, put the storage box over it so it acts as a Cold Frame, place a brick of two on top to stop it blowing away.........and you'll have Aquilegias:yes::snorky:

I'll keep an eye on this thread, I never realised there were such lovely varieties out there. I inherited all mine when I moved into this garden over 30 years ago so maybe it's time to refresh with some nicer modern ones.

I just love them too :hapydancsmil:. I inherited several purple and very pretty white and pink Aquiligias with the house. They are excellent for the Bees and I don't mind them self seeding either. They would look fantastic in your woodland type setting @Sienna's Blossom or your cottage garden :blue thumb:

There are so many different combinations of colour with established Aquilegias, JWK, due to the cross pollination. It's a plant worth having!!:snorky:

@Sienna's Blossom There's no risk to other plants as it is plant specific. Try growing some from seed. That way you won't waste a lot of money if there is downy mildew in your area.

@BeeHappy some of the photos that Carrie had on her website were from our garden as her collection and ours seemed to be hit at the same time

Here's a thread I started about seven years ago.

Some of the colours and different shapes of flowers that I had last year, JWK. All from seed sown years ago and the result of cross pollinating.

                              Nice photos Armandii

I think this is my problem, having taken no interest in them and tolerating them as flowering weeds all mine have inter-bred and are quite bland. Mind you they are tough blighters, I have a big one growing half way up the trunk of my 7 foot Tree Fern, I keep pulling it out but each year it comes back bigger.
