Good job I got some fresh seeds. I put half a dozen old seeds (Mammoth Russian large headed) in a pot, 1 rotted, 1 did nothing, 4 'germinated' but were distorted with defective roots.

I've not planted mine yet only some that I feed the birds, they will still flower and look nice, its only a bit of fun, we have no chance of winning some of the pro's on here unless we go and cut theirs down :ideaIPB::heehee:

Not sown mine yet as they grow stronger if sown in open ground (with some protection at first), but I sow general sunflowers mid-April in cell trays in greenhouse, 2 seeds per cell for single plants (remove weakest, sometimes slugs will remove one for you), or 5 seeds per cell if growing for cut flowers as letting them all grow will stunt them and produce smaller plants but masses of 'cutting size' flowers, totally unsuitable for this competition, but thought I'd mention it as I'm sure there's going to be all sorts of other sunflower stuff posted on this thread.

no, no, no - we go in the middle of the night and plant them deeper and then give the petals a trim...

Last year on a satellite forum i use we ended up with a how tall are your sunflowers thread, one of the older members was fortifying his bird hut to keep the squirrels out he succeeded, but then the squirrels turned there attention to his sunflowers and bit all there heads off,

Its not funny but I had to laugh he was saying very seriously they had done it for spite :roflol:
