you cant beat aldi, esp for their cheeses and speciality sliced meats, but i found we cant get everything there for the weekly shop of what we usually need.

there is a lot of snobbery involving shopping these days, and because aldi and the likes are not one of the main brands of supermarket, it is considered a bit low rent to a lot of folk, why i dont know, bu thats the uk these days. there is only 2 supermarkets i use now, one is aldi, the other asda, as the others are just shocking in the customer service stakes, especially compared to asda.

aldi is the no frills, no fuss, in and out type, and asda is the hyperstore that you can get everything. i used sainsburys for donkeys years, but now use the 2 above, i wont entertain anyone else now.

and the deal days aldi do are worth going to, you can get some brilliant stuff for a bargain price.

I'm a Lidyl's fan. I think their fruit and veg is fresher than the standard UK Supermarkets and I buy their "dentalux"Toothpaste . It does it like it says on the tube and @ 79p for 125ml it is incredibly good value. Also like their butter and Greek yoghourt in the litre tub for £1.28.

As there is such a choice of supermarkets nowadays I'm able to indulge in my likes and dislikes.

The two easier ones to get to (with free parking) are Tesco and Sainsburys which are in the nearest big town (6-7 miles away).

I'm not keen on the quality of the bread and meat in Tesco and don't like their lighting.

I prefer Sainsburys, their lighting is OK and there customer service is always good. The bread is OK and their butcher knows me and is prepared for me to ask him to bring out other packs of the meat that's on display. When there are specials on the cuts I like he keeps some aside for me. Good service

The nearest Asda (6 miles) doesn't have free parking but I wouldn't go there even if it did :heehee:. I've tried them a few times and can't stand what I call 'Radio Asda'. They have their own music and info blaring out all the time. Not for me!

No Aldi nearby but there is Lidl and I will pop in there if I'm near there (it's further away - 8 miles). I've always found the quality good but they don't stock much of what I shop for.

Waitrose is in a different town but I'll look in there when nearby. Good quality but at a higher price.

Budgens is only two miles away (in a small town) but I'll only go there if I'm in the area and need something urgently.

Village shop - open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 365 days of the year. I go there if we need any 'top-up' shopping and they do some good fresh baked bread.

          :)

Mrs JWK won't go into Marks and Sparks because of their air conditioning, why do they have to have it so cold? It's like stepping into a morgue, very uninviting brrrrrrr!

Have you been in Morrisons recently? They got dry ice pouring over the fresh veg:hate-shocked:

Its like a Roller Disco in there.

I once witnessed a snob woman in Aldi. It was most funny. She complained at the till because the checkout girl was going too fast for her. After complaining, the checkout girl simply told her that it was the rules, the shopper should put everything back in the trolley and then sort it out at the provided benches, out of the way of the queue. That way nobody is left waiting too long. The snob woman went ballistic, and was almost in tears of rage. I too was almost in tears, trying to stifle the laughter:)

I don't like supermarkets, but sometimes they are the only practical option (for some things), so when I go, I use Aldi or Lidl. They're the only two that I actually enjoy. I love the competition at the til, me vs seasoned till lady. The challenge: Try to clear my end of the checkout before she can scan the next item through, so that I can make a show of impatiently waiting for her to catch up. I've never achieved it yet.

In the early days of these stores arriving in the UK, you could actually earn more working for them than in an office ... they only hired staff of competence, and paid them well for it!

They still have a much higer hourly rate, but what is hidden is the staff are
Self Employed and have to pay their own NI, TAX and save for holiday pay

Just now it is double the minimum wage or £3 more per hour than a Civil Serpent

Going back easy 5 years now, the Lidl/Aldi (can't remember which it was) nearest us when we were in Sheffield had a recruitment drive. Back then they were offering £7.50 per hour for shop floor staff, rising to £8.50 per hour for supervisory roles.

                That's not bad that.
