David Dimbleby was on one of his exploration travelogue programs. When asked what his accent was, he replied "BBC".

That used to be the accepted definition - even though it wasn't quite correct. BBC English, or Oxford English, were considered the 'proper' accent and pronunciation. The original accepted definition for pronunciation was 'Received English' whereas 'BBC' and 'Oxford' included grammar as well. (Dunno what me granma had to do wiv it!)

I was happy with my Cockney until my school beat it out of me :noidea:. To be fair to the school, the more of the language I learned the more my accent and pronunciation changed because of having to show the differentiation between similar sounding words - instead of slurring them together. I then became a bookworm which expanded my vocabulary and caused me a bit of mickey taking when I went into the Merchant Navy. On my ship they nicknamed me the 'perfessor' :heehee:

When I was at University I had friends from a variety of countries. The level of English ability varied from person to person. I claim I speak as a do because I had to a anunciate clearly in order to converse with them. I used to like listening to these different nationalities converse with each in their own form of English. Fair play to them I say.

As regards BBC accents, I think broadcasting protocol has gone too far the opposite way. Nowadays in order to satisfy demographic quotas there are broadcasters and advertisers with very strong regional accents. Very bad diction too. You can still have a regional accent and broadcast eloquently.

The ex Red Dwarf star Craig Charles hosts A Saturday night show on BBC radio 2. He clearly has his own Liverpudlian accent but his speech is clear and concise. Sports broadcaster Mark Chapman is another clear speaker that retains his original accent.

Sara Cox? Talks a lot of rubbish and in a drawl that's hard to understand. Friday night 80s show is probably the best show on the radio but shame about the presenter.

(Sorry if anyone is related to Sara Cox.)

        G.

Ps. Does anyone remember the Datsun (?) advert where the voice over was in a strong Tyneside accent and a Japonese man repeated what was said in clearer English. Not PC but still very funny.

I agree that presenters should speak properly and use good grammar. :dbgrtmb:

That's something completely opposite to what I think should be allowed to happen on a forum such as this. When it's in an informal situation the spelling and grammar is not important as long as people are allowed to get their point across. Although it grates on me when people use text speak as it always gives the impression of laziness. Not that it's wrong in this type of communication but just something I'm not keen on.

Of course, being snooty and verbose (sorry, I can't help it :heehee:) probably upsets other people. :)

I am one of those "grammar bullies". I know my grammar isn't perfect but I try my best. It can take me half an hour to write a single paragraph. My OCD requires me to keep going over it and editing it until I'm 100% happy I've got it right. I was rubbish in chat rooms. I could never keep up.

Is there a forum on bad grammar in official documents or on advertisements? It would be interesting viewing.

All official documents and advertisements have bad grammar! :snorky:

When I was writing my books I used to edit them myself, three times. Then they went to my sister, who is a published poet, and she made some more corrections and gave me advice on a better flow for the wording.

Then it went to a friend who is a professional editor and proof reader (retired). He found loads of errors and parts that could be better.

So I wouldn't worry if your writing is not perfect. :heehee:

ahh, the art of communication. A wonderful subjective world we live in. We all have to determine our "class" from our words not that it is more important to simply have a good conversation.

my father spoke 8 languages. he would say sometime, that a person spoke "higher" or "lower" of that language when after he had a conversation with them.

The chap that dreamt up that list shot himself thoroughly in both feet. Anyone notice that 'borrowing foreign words' is terribly non-U, but apparently 'U' people prefer 'repartee' to 'banter'.
It reminds me of the famous quote from George W Bush...."The French have no word for 'entrepreneur'" :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I've worked as an editor and I always try to be clear in what I write and I appreciate clarity in what others write. I also try to be precise with punctuation as the meaning af a sentence can change depending on the punctuation used. I do take my time writing my posts for this reason. Sometimes when I go back over what I've written, when using my iPad, I find the "predictive text " has typed something that I didn't intend.

Another downside of all of this is that one of my sons once accused me of being the word police.

The French are going through a phase of sticking apostrophes into any and all words in the fond belief that it makes them trendy. It's especially noticeable in shop names. Bless, they'd jump off a cliff if someone decided that it was the fashionable thing to do :heehee:
