I always go by ferry too. Don't like it that much more, but I reckon I have to accept SOMETHING to be able to visit my parents and sister in Germany and in-laws in Denmark! In the light of all this I just hope they will step up controls on ferry ports a bit as well, I mean, I always go Dover-Calais (shortest crossing possible, I am a wreck coming off anyway!) and only once have they asked me to open the boot of the car to take a look, and that was back in 1999! Never even once since then - and other cars neither! I mean, how many explosives can one bring onto a boat in the trunk of a VW Polo, let alone a 4 wheel drive! I hope they are checking the lorries at least.
Then again, at least on a boat you stand a chance, even with explosives in the belly of the thing set off remotely - unless you are right above the point where the ferry breaks apart, you can get off somehow and swim... if you are lucky! On a plane, in most cases, that's you :(

Oh, Wishaw, I just had a right good chuckle reading yours! :D :D :D Sorry, but you can "hear" the fear in your voice! I'm not a very strong swimmer so I'd have to find something floating to hang on to as it's a long way to either side from the middle of the Bay of Biscay! Of course, I insist on watching things like Titanic and The Poseidon Adventure!

We to and fro in a Transit van and have only been checked once and we've made dozens of crossings! Like you said, it's worrying! The stupid thing is we have to go through a big palavra over the cats. Used to have to fill out forms for them, show injection certificates, had them scanned for their ID chips (I was always panicking one would escape at the ferry port). It ended up t'other half would not let the inspectors go into the van; he would clamber into their two-storey luxury travelling home with them and scan and read the numbers our through the mesh to the inpspector. This was not nice for t'other half as he's claustaphobic!

So, the moral is ... don't bring diseases in with your animals, but bombs are okay!

PS When we were stopped and asked to open the doors of the Transit, it was so full the inspector laughed and said we couldn't even cram a cockroach in there so didn't bother to look at anything! Tight security? .... me thinks not!

Just after 9/11 we were flying home from Jersey and messages were continously coming over the tannoy that you must keep your luggage with you. Any luggage/parcels left about would be removed by security officers.

When I reported an item wrapped in brown paper that had been left for some time I told a security officer and he laughed - looked at it and said it was ok as you can see it is a birdcage. He did not look in it or investigate in any way. I would imagine a large amount of explosives could have been inside - even if it was 'birdcage' shaped.
    So much for safety measures!

have a few drinks first, then you won't notice the pain (or they won't let you on board.... - oh well, just an idea!) Seriously, Scotkat - hope your back isn't too bad - I know how it feels - have you tried the heat packs you can use and throw away? I find they really help.
