Tesco 50% high juice wine

    Id love to have a go at making my own wine! But ive never attempted anything like this before :)

    Do i need to use demijohns etc? Is it expensive to set up and/or difficult to do?

    Can someone tell me how you make it from fruit etc? Or is there a website that i can get the basics from please?

    Hi PB,

    There are many winemaking websites & you can make wine out of most things, except mushrooms and tomatoes.

    If you just want to dabble then demijohns are a good start, you can usually get some off freecycle.

    It doesn't cost a lot to start brewing & even the more expensive Items will last so many years and will have paid for themselves within the first few months, so it really is a good investment.

    I'm still using the same funnel that I bought from boots in 1977.

    Often you can just use the juice of vegetables to make wine & you still get to eat the veg :thumbsup:

    Ginger wine is good for a first attempt, very cheap & easy. You'll need a demijohn, airlock to keep the vinegar fly out, some wine yeast & nutrient, ginger & 2 & a half pound of sugar. Oh, and a bit of lemon Juice, yeast likes a slightly acid environment.

    You're tempting me to start wine making again, Ziggy! I used to make a lot of "hedge" wines and got up to 14% quite easily. If yeast keeps turning the sugar to alchohol it'll go higher. I've got 8 demi-johns, traps, a lot of wine bottles up in the loft where they've been for some years - but like I said, it's tempting!!

    With wine going the way of petrol price wise, its worth doing my friend. Remember when honey was cheap enough to make mead :cry3:

    And remember Charlton Heston in Soylent Green, with the $50 a jar strawberries. The time Soylent Green was set is only 11 years away.

    Hey Paula,

    I bet that is a fantastic wine, was it from your Fathers own vines ? How long did he mature it ? and yes, I can imagine that is a lot of work.

    My favourite wine that I used to make was elderberry - now that you could get a high alcohol content and it was so smooth and port like. Blackberry could, if you didn't get it right, be acidic but I liked sharp tasting wines.
    I remember that film, Ziggy, it was quite far thinking and controversial at the time. I just hope our food resources don't get to that state!

    [size=large]Yes about one hour from Turin, somewhere lost in a hill, he had this slanting piece of land with many rows of wine which is now all gone wild and he used to spend a lot of time there as an old man. [/size]

    [size=large]I couldn't tell you the number of months used to produce the wine but it was many. [/size]

    [size=large]At the start he would take very good care of the wines (you have to prune them in a certain way and then spray them with some green stuff) and then the grapes were collected and pressed with some big wooden tool and then I know that he would often mention the stirring and turning but since I have hardly been there where he kept all the wine making stuff, I don't know many details.[/size]

    [size=large]It crossed my mind sometimes to take up this family tradition, but I am so not the person for too hard work (sad but true) besides it would entail living in Italy which is not in my plans.[/size]

    I did tell Simon not to drink the whole bottle in one sitting :DOH::DOH:

    It came out at about 30%
