I've sold a lot of chilli plants so far this year :hapydancsmil: and shall take another batch of them today if I get the time. The Nagas go to the staff at the local Indian restaurants and Take Aways for £7.50 each. Some of the Shiney Hybrids go to them as well. They sell for between £3 - £5. All good money for the charity :dbgrtmb:

Shiney Hybrids. Most of them only grow about 6"-9" high but produce up to 200 fruit during the season. I feed them with tomato feed about once a week.

This one didn't hybridise well

Shiney you have a very impressive set-up going on. I'm starting to feel amateurish ! Are the hybrids your own creation ? And where in the world are you ?? I see you have autopots , what is the growing medium you are using ???

I think you were looking at the pots of Webmaster (Nathan).

Yes, the hybrids are our creation. :blue thumb: We're on the Essex/Hertfordshire border.

The pots we use are any old ones that are lying around and we pot the plants on when we find time (and if we can be bothered) :heehee:

We just grow lots of plants because we sell them for charity. :noidea:

It's quite difficult. You need to keep the donor plants isolated for a season and then hand pollinate them and keep them isolated for the new season. Chillies are very promiscuous :hate-shocked:

We separated our original Tabasco plants (ones that had the flavour and size of chilli that we wanted) and crossed them with a chilli (can't remember which variety but a pretty hot one) that only grows small. We, now, don't bother isolating any, just grow from seeds form the previous year and keep the plants that come out the way we want them. The others are given away.

It's a bit different now because we only grow the hybrids and Nagas. Those two varieties don't seem to pollinate each other.

I've tried digging out some old photos and these are the only ones that I can find quickly.

These were the original Tabasco parents (can't find the others) in their third year.

And the end result five years later.

They're quite a bit hotter than the original Tabasco and with a lovely fresh flavour.

They look good. The tobasco is massive !! I might have a crack next season. I have an idea of what I want to cross. Isolation would be the toughie for me. I might build some frames a bit like mini greenhouses and try that way.
Ideally I would just get a massive greenhouse in a field and grow every variety I could get my hands on [emoji2]

We isolated ours by growing them indoors. Just had a little trouble with whitefly :hate-shocked:

I'm a little late to the party this year. Alas I've had a chilli disaster.

I usually grow paper lanterns and sweet peppers. This year however, I decided to buy some plants from someone locally. Sold to me as ghost naga and Carolina reaper. Unfortunately he was sold some duff seeds and they are all cayenne. Not the end of the world, I actually can't handle anything hotter than a korma, but love the rewards of chilli growing.

I found an old packet of jalapeños in a draw And have grown those, they have been tremendous, but I have lost the packet. They look ready to pick but are still dark green, they are taking an age to go red.

Is it ok to pick and consume whilst still green, or is it best to wait until they've gone red? Is there any benefit to them being red? Do they get hotter?

You can eat them green but the seeds will not be any good to keep. What sort of chillis do you wanna grow ? I got a variety of seeds and am happy to share !!

The answer to all those questions is - Yes :blue thumb: :heehee:

Some chillies don't go red and will propagate from seeds of the green chilli but it sounds as though you don't have those varieties.
