I grew some superhot types this year but not had any chillis hardly. Used 10ltr buckets and whilst the plants look great they have spent too much time growing and not fruiting. Back to 6ltr next year.... and I can get more in haha

I must admit I am quite a bit of a fan. Had 20 varieties last year but cut down to 8 this year and used bigger pots and it's been a disaster !!!! Smaller pots and 30 varieties next year I think !!!!!

@Jonathan Hind I don't use large pots. We find that restricting the pot size tends to make them fruit more. We never pot them on (once we've germinated the seed we start them in a 3" pot) until the roots are coming out of the bottom - and then only pot them on gradually.

The superhot Nagas (pictured on the previous page) are never put into anything bigger than a 3 litre pot and the Shiney Hybrids never more than 2 litre pots.

Same applies to tomatoes too, smaller pot means more fruit but more watering

Also, later in the season, if you want the chillies to ripen quicker then miss out the occasional watering. Apparently, stressing the plant creates hotter chillies and they ripen quicker. This is only anecdotal and empirical and I've not seen any published 'proof' - although there may be some.

We've just come back from a week's holiday and the chillies are looking very healthy (a friend watered them every day). We had a message on our answerphone from a local Indian restaurant saying that they wanted more chilli plants. So Mrs Shiney sold six more plants to them. :blue thumb:
