I think that there is documented evidence that it does make them hotter but I, also, agree that if you want them hotter then get a hotter variety.

It tends to stress me when I see plants that are stressed.

We tend to cut ours back fairly hard - did ours a month ago. It also depends on what temperature your porch drops down to. If it drops down to 10C then I really can't see much point in bothering as they won't even attempt to try and grow again at that temperature. You'll find that newly sown plants that are kept indoors in a warmer situation will end up being better plants.

If you're able to bring them in from the porch and keep them at a temperature of, at least, 15C then it would be worth it.

Take a look at this video

Thanks @shiney . I saw that video just after I'd posted the question. But your answer gave me the information I needed.

Ive been starting the various chillies since the start of the year, doing a couple each weekend & its starting to look like spring..

Ive just potted on the first batch of superhots (Dorset Naga I think) & migrated them out of the heated prop onto the windowsill:

But everything is getting extra light from my home made LED growlights:

Yes - there are a couple of cucumbers in there too, just in case we get a warm March - April (Its been over 20'c in my greenhouse this week.. although the heater has been kicking in too)

Just pricked my Tokyo out , to grow them on in my light box . Just a photo for any Chilli or from seed newbies . When you prick out from seed trays most seedling will wilt a little , Chillis are drama queens and go for the full dieing swan routine  These will be bouncing full of health tomorrow morning !

I have tiny seedlings, nowhere near that size but I am happy they're not getting too leggy. They're in a heated windowsill propagator

These don't look brilliant but they germinated in three days and this photo was taken on the 23rd, just under two weeks from putting the seeds in the sprouter. They've been potted up to half their depth and are doing well.

The interesting thing is that we did two trays of Nagas. This lot were from one dried chilli (with virtually 100% germination) and the other tray was done from a very ripe fresh chilli. The other one is only just starting to germinate three weeks later - and not doing very well.

Well, I sowed mine on 14th Feb. (I think that date was mentioned in a previous year's thread?)

I've got patio sizzle, ream, fuego F1, cayenne, Lombardo, and Corro Rosso. Most have germinated, so I guess I'll be looking for people to give them away to soon! Also, hubby came back from the UK with a pack of Pluglet plants, so I have 6 strong young apaches as well!

Some of our chillies are doing well (but slower than usual) but we're having a bit of a whitefly crisis.

I am quite pleased with how my chillies are doing - just don't know what we are going to do with all the plants, never mind all the harvest! We still have one string of dried chillies from last autumn, and a couple of bags of frozen chillies from last year, and the year before.... image.jpeg

Can't believe I've been missing a chilli thread !!! They were how I got into gardening.

The picture is a glimpse of the greenhouse last August. Had far to many plants growing I could hardly move. This year I'm growing Green Hornet, Carolina Reapers, 7 Pot SR, Thai Mound, Yellow JalapeƱo, Bhut Orange Copenhagen, Caramel Moruga. ( I like them hot ).
I grow mine in a small heated propagator until they get too big then they live on windowsills until it gets a little warmer. To germinate them I soak the seeds in lukewarm tea (in my experience they don't like milk or sugar). I will get some pics up in the morning when I finish work !
