    Inded they are.

People are entitled to all sorts of opinions which they are not entitled to voice though, for example racial and religious hatred.

    I'm sure they did.

He was saying to the OP "do what you like and sod the law" - I never suggested that people didn't understand that, only that it was inappropriate advice to give.

So, just to get back on topic BaS, are you now saying that even low voltage has to be put through amoured cable and cannot be fixed to a fence?

    Dont forget.

Green for positive, red for neutral and blue for live....erm, In the interest of people who may read this...that which I have just said is a load of manure OK....would hate to upset the new resident expert.:D:D:D:D

So to be correct. Green or green with a white stripe for Earth, Red or brown for positive and Blue for neutral.....unless you are colour blind...then you will find out when you plug it in.........

In the old days, positive and negative were both covered in red cotton and you were the earth....good eh!!!

    Sorry been away.

    That is wrong.

It is green / yellow for earth not white.

    Brown is Live

    Blue is neutral

Fitting a plug top here is a tip

2nd letter of colour tells you where it goes

    bRown = r = right

    bLlue = l = left

wire that is left goes neither to the left or right, must go to the top

as for posative and negative these are used in respect of D.C. Currents not A.C Currents

For example: mains is called Live and Neutral

a car would have Posative and Negative

A (SELV) 24 v pump is of little use as I first mentioned, since they often can not pump as much as a mains pump, and cost more for less quality.

Ban-All-Sheds has a bad attitude, but what he says is correct. I think would have been better recieved if he had put it another way.

Yes part P is a pain, and just because something works does not mean to say that it is either safe or correct.

People will plant bulbs upside down, they will grow, but it is not correct.

"Even" low voltage? All you've got available to you are low voltage & extra-low voltage (I hope).

The IEC definitions of voltage bands are:

Extra Low Voltage: AC below 50V and DC below 120V

    Low Voltage: 50 - 1000V AC or 120 - 1500V DC

    Medium voltage: 1kV - 35kV

    High voltage: 35kV - 230kV

    Extra-high voltage: >230kV

The Wiring Regulations do not distinguish between low voltage and extra low voltage when it comes to protecting cables against external influences or how they should be supported.

And it's been that way for at least 17 years. Whilst the consequences of shoving a spade through an ELV cable won't be as spectacular as an LV one the requirements for protecting it against the spade are just the same, so if you bury an ELV cable then it has to be armoured or have earthed mechanical protection just as an LV one does.

And the reason it's not called positive & negative, or positive & neutral is that it isn't - it alternates. The live voltage with respect to neutral alternates between +325V and -325V 100 times per second.

Try just reading the words I write, and nothing but the words I write, and without adding any non-verbal elements of your own invention.

So you troll all the forums on the web, looking for unsafe practices or postings in regard to electricity and just join up to tell people they are irresponsible yea......pull the other one....preferably a live wire whilst standing in a bowl of water:rolleyes:

Of all the bars/joints (misquote, heh, heh) in the world, etc, etc.

lol..who knows what colour is which these days.
With the new "harmonised" colours you have brown, black and grey to contend with.
Might be a good plan to wear marigolds and wellies if you doing any mains wiring, Tweaky ;)

"2nd letter of colour tells you where it goes"

For the older amongst us it might help by remembering that "George Brown was a live wire" ;)

A saying that Gordon Brown has ruined :(
