A few years ago on hols we came round the corner and wow!! saw this tropical display of Bromeliads, palms and bananas and it was not even in the sub tropics. This is in New York. Their summers are warm enough for these outdoor displays.

How to make a Panama hat. :thumb:

I've never worked out where to put these photos and thought this seemed a good place. :)

If you didn't know, Panama hats don't come from Panama  :). They originated in Ecuador and what is now the little town of Montechristi was one of the earliest villages that made them.

Here is the traditional way to make them.

They are made from the young leaves of the carludovica palmata.

The leaf is stripped to divide it into single threads.

Then hung up to air dry.

Then boiled in water and bleached with lemon juice.

The top of the hat is then hand woven.

Then held between two blocks of wood whilst the sides and brim are woven. The size of the block decides the size of the hat.

This lady is doing the job in the old, very laborious and uncomfortable, way. It can only be done in the early morning or in the evening when the air is moist enough for the threads to be pliant.

    It is then scrubbed

    and hung out to dry.

The long ends are cut off and it is then ironed.

    And given a final trim.

    You are indeed favoured Yorkie.
I am North of York and it only takes but a short ride to be up there in the dales and moors.
