I find that the Shiney Hybrids have virtually 100% germination. :blue thumb:

I think that @"M" and @silu have grown them from seed so they could give an idea of % germination.

Is that in the year subsequent to seed saving, or also in following (subsequent) years?

Germination is very good, somewhere around 85%ish. I think I sowed 2 year old seed and previous seasons' and both were fine. I sow mine in a heated propagator but not just yet, probably will sow next week. Shiney hybrid seems quicker to ripen than other sorts I have grown. i have 3 of last season's plants on the bathroom windowsill. I hope they are going to make it through this less than pleasant winter as the bathroom at times can be not that warm!

I've found that using last year's (fresh) seed tends to germinate quicker but I still get virtually 100% germination with older seed. Not tried it past third year seed.

Yep, did that and now the lid is back on and I've got about 30% seedlings now. Waiting for the others to start making an appearance...

I'm sure I read on this forum a few years ago that a good date for sowing chillie seeds is 14th Feb. Anyway, that is when I've sown them for the past few years, and we have been very successful, about 70% germination rate for bought seeds (apart from Ream, which was 20% or less). They grow away well indoors beneath a skylight (the best I can do), moving outside in June, weather permitting. We crop between 30-100 chillies per plant, depending on variety. So for those who have not sown their seeds yet, don't panic!!

I too can remember that there's supposed to be something significant about that date, but can't recall exactly what

My chilli seeds are being sown this afternoon, in heated propagators under growlights indoors.

I intended saving some of last year's plants, but shortly after I brought them indoors loads of aphids appeared from nowhere and infested them, so I chucked them out.

100% germination this time. :blue thumb: If we get around to it we shall transplant them into a seed tray tomorrow.

Been having a think (:nonofinger:). In the past I’ve grown ‘Apache’. It adds a lot of flavour, but every now and then it’s just too hot, 80-100,000 on the scale. Any suggestions for something full-flavoured but a little less intense?
