We had a washer/dryer once and yes the clothes came out a bit musty and needed a thorough airing after. With our vented one they come out fresh, not as fresh as hanging outside of course. As well as being expensive to run the vent means we have a 4" hole in the wall letting in the cold when it's not in use. We haven't used it in 6 months and might just hang them to dry on racks inside and stick them in the dryer for 5 minutes to freshen them.

I always aim to dry all our laundry outside ,our tumble dryer is down in our garage and very seldom gets used. It's old but is still functioning in case of emergencies. We had to have one when all the brood were living at home, especially with all their school uniforms to dry.

With winter laundry I tend to place it on airers that night after taking them from the outside line which are place around the large dehumidifier upstairs....this just ensures that they are bone dry and aired by the next morning. :blue thumb: I hate the smell of laundry that was folded and stored away unaired....reminds be of our brood's laundry when they came home from Uni for the holidays. I kept trying to tell them.....but I think they had just grown use to the uni laundry fragrance that lingered in the hall of residence!!!:roflol:

An excellent film from the book "Make Room, Make Room!" by Harry Harrison - written in 1966. Some superb acting from Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson with Robinson making the best performance of his star studded life. It was rather poignant as he dies in the film and was actually dying of cancer when he made it.

It won a couple of awards and was the first time (1973) that I became aware of the possible result of climate change.

        "Greenflation"

Greenflation Is the Latest Climate Term on Our Jargon Watch List (treehugger.com)

I was going to post a link from the FT on the same subject, but you need to subscribe. The following piece from the FT summed up the current energy crisis.

Governments, and greens in particular, need to recognise that trying to shut down the old economy too fast threatens to push the price of building a cleaner one out of reach.

Haven't seen it, but have heard about it - even that limited amount of info to go on is scary enough.

There can be no doubt the climate is changing, but then it has for millions of years. There can also be no doubt that we are seeing one of the biggest transfers of wealth in history and all in the name of the environment - - let's be honest, if there really was a 'climate emergency/crisis' would those who are warning of us be flying around in private jets, running 6-litre Mercedes and building massive beachfront condos?

The thing is that man has been ruining the planet and environment for hundreds of years in all kinds of different ways, pollution is a big one but so is land grabbing, not really much wild land left in the world where man hasn't ruined it or polluted it or built on it.

They only worry about so called climate change because it will affect the human race, the rest is not a problem as far as they are concerned.

They will never attain the goals they have set for the worlds emissions, so best to give up making pointless statements and just work out how to deal with the problems its going to create.

Its all about being seen to be doing something while at the same time squeezing the little bloke.

Then take into account, sport. The powers that run these organisations are expanding tournaments. The champions league, already going to be expanded by 2024, all these preliminary rounds, are they justified. The FIFA world cup is to be expanded from 32 Nations to 48 for the 2026 tournament. Then F1, the new American owners want to increase the calendar, so eventually there will be 30 Grand Prix's. All these events have a major impact on climate change, transport being the major contribution, so what do they do, expand these events which results in large volumes of even more spectators travelling to these events, airmiles.

If they are serious about climate change, then they need to start at the top of the chain first.

On the tumble dryer debate, I spent about 500 on our dryer. I built it myself. It's an open fronted shelter in the garden, with a clear corrugated plastic roof. When it's not full of laundry, it's also a nice place to sit aside when the weather is a bit changeable.

I had an idea about this. I'm no economist so this might be stupid, but here goes anyway.

What if energy companies got taxed on a sliding scale based on profits, but profits from renewables were taxed at a lower rate than profits from fossil fuels. Then to counter the argument that this would reduce investment in British territory, the extra tax from fossil fuel profits gets ring fenced and stored in a separate pot. The energy companies can then apply for investment from this pot, and will get it if their plans meet certain criteria, like being for a new renewable project. That way they can still keep their insane profits, people's pension funds keep their value, and there is a strong incentive to develop a cleaner, cheaper future.

They are in very small number then - the most vocal, are. Start off with the likes of Prince Harry and work from there.

I do not understand Current climate change, in today's Britain
In the 50's - 60's 40million houses had coal fires, burnt coal and wood
the railways ran steam engines with coal, and even some lorries were
                      steam powered
Then two world wars, with fire and smoke Yes some areas got smog
It must be much climate frendlier Today
