I will be defrosting all my meat joints in future to cut down on cooking time.

I'm wondering about getting those old style draught excluders for the bottom of doors. They looked like long sausages, any ideas where I could get these. Thinking of our patio doors in particular and the front door, although that has a plastic strip which might be better to replace with an efficient one.

I use a offcut of carpet, cut to size, rolled & glued. So easy to roll into place with one foot.

I think with an 80% rise in energy, and that's forgetting the previous rise, and then another big hike in January there isn't much you can do to make a difference, unless you have been reckless in the past.

Oh and don't forget, when covid gets going again in the winter keep all your windows open.

I think you can make a difference pete, as energy prices increase the small adjustments are magnified by the same amount. So turning down your house heating by a degree might have saved you £100 last winter, it will save you getting on for £400 this coming winter. Same goes for all those little tweaks, switching off rads in unused rooms, fitting draught proof strips, swapping to LED lamps etc etc

We've got all the insulation done years ago. I wash my hair once a week instead of 2. Hubby used to wash his every day but only once a week. I only wash clothes and other things if i only have a full load but I'm not sure if reducing the temperature helps with cleaning them as good.
My washing machine only takes in a bit of water because the modern ones do now.

I've reduced my washing machine temp to 40, is this as low as I can go to get the clothes clean?

I think you can go lower ...modern washing liquids are telling us that stains can be removed on much cooler washes. Try a 30 temp program and do a 30 minute soak at the beginning .
Check an item in the load for stain removal.....I would love to know if it works for you John,

I didn't because my energy supplier went bust in the autumn and the new one thrust upon me didn't bill until this spring. So it kind of took me by surprise when the backdated bills started to roll in. It's still all a muddle what I've paid and what I still owe the previous company. I'm sure I'm not the only one that got caught out.

I've been using 40c for years, but I use 60c on bedding.
Most of my clothes still have dribble down the front when they come out.

I dont think it gets stains out.

I am worried that if you turn off all radiators in unused rooms - spare bedrooms, loft space - and it's very cold....will mould develop?

Yes it's possible you can get mould in unheated rooms, so maybe a little background heat is needed. We have a couple of unheated spare rooms, one I have my grow lamps in and it never gets really cold in there, the adjacent rooms provide some heat. I open the window on sunny winter days to keep them fresh.

Lofts are a different story, they can get condensation but usually they have plenty of ventilation to prevent mould forming. It depends if you store stuff up there, things like family photographs shouldn't go in a loft, freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer can ruin them.
