I don't often buy frozen prepared food but when I do, such as a lasagna, I let it thaw before baking. I don't see any point in paying to heat it up to refrigerator temperature!

I just realized a good way to repurpose my tea ball or whatever you call that mesh thing that is supposed to hold loose tea. I have never used mine so I put some mosquito bits in it and sunk it into the capillary watering tank for my indoor plants. That way the plants will draw up water that will kill any gnats in the soil.

That is my way of trying to save on costs. Repurpose anything I've got before chucking it or buying new items I can make myself from things on hand.

We do a lot of batch cooking, usually having one meal (three individual portions) then freeze to have at a later date. Ready meals from the supermarket are not commonplace for us.

Slow cooker is also one of our 'go-to' favourites.

@Fat Controller you'd like a Sunoven. I use mine like a slow cooker to make batches of spaghetti sauce, or stews or chili con carne. I can also do hard cooked eggs in there, some desserts - and it doesn't cost a thing for power.

Mine is about 6 or so years old and though it costs a bit initially, it has paid for itself.

I can honestly say I've never had a ready meal.
Mostly because they never come out like the picture, I've seen the end results.
I mostly only have 2 or 3 items on my plate any way and they have to taste of what they look like.

Agree, but for the frozen food people to put that on their instructions might be counter productive as it will point out that frozen food might not be so necessary.

Also they tend to have less of the nutritional value than home cooked and contain much more than necessary salt and sugar.

The salt is to hide the dire flavour of the bad ingredients. There is a school of thought, to some extent backed by science, that the sugar is there to make it addictive. This latter point they can get away with because although there is a growing body of evidence that sugar is actually addictive, it has not yet been definitively proven.

I think I have looked into one of those before - if I recall correctly, I struggled to work out where I would put it.

I would have been eating cold food for the last three weeks if I had a sun over. First requirement is sun!

That too is a problem here in the UK, even more so where you are.

You just take it out the freezer before going to work in the morning.
                    It's not rocket science.

We always defrost the night before in the fridge, that way it saves energy because the fridge can free wheel. Sticking a frozen meal on the counter cools the kitchen down plus our cat would find it.

We batch cook so it's not just shop bought meals that go in the freezer. Plus we freeze a lot of excess produce.

Has anyone got a good recipe for gruel, just asking for a friend. ;)

Apparently it's coming back in fashion.

I think you boil it overnight in a big cauldron.

For anyone looking for an air fryer by the way, the Tesco 'go cook' own brand one is supposed to be good
