The cost of living... what can we do?

That is why we have stuck with the old one. There is also a slightly more modern smaller one in the shed (we used to switch it on at Christmas for our frozen food) but since Mum passed away and we moved in it has been full of glassware! I even found an ice cream freezer in the garage but I have never switched it on to see if it works.

 

Same here, I wouldn't even contemplate purchasing a new appliance to save on energy at the moment.

I have a positively ancient chest freezer. I can't say how old it is because it was given to me 12 years ago by a friend that wanted rid of it because it was ancient then.

As we also have a more typical fridge freezer, I had planned to get rid of it. But when I plugged my energy meter onto it, I worked it it was costing about 6 quid per month to run. It would be more like a tenner since the electricity prices went up.

I weigh this up against how much I can save on food and cooking by freezing stuff, compared to buying and cooking from fresh every time. I think it still just about makes sense to keep it.

That said, I still nearly got rid of it. Right up until my missus told me if I want my weekend beers to be ice cold, we need to keep it, as the fridge freezer is permanently chock full.

 

Just seen a woman on the news, one small child.
Apparently she is disabled so living on benefits, she says she is paying £100 a week on gas, already?

Seems an awful lot of gas to be using this early in the coming winter.

Never get any mention about where the kid's father is.

 

It's all down to what you are used to.
I remember getting soaked on the way to school and still wet by the time I went home.
Somehow it didn't really bother me too much.

 

I thought about something like that. I hire a church hall for an hour a week. It has moveable tables and chairs and there's a fully equipped kitchen just to the side. I thought about asking the landlady if we could organise something together through her church.

But then I got to thinking, it can't operate all day. So let's say we did it for a couple of hours per day. Great, but wouldn't people simply be freezing when walking between home and the hall?

 

I wonder if members of the House of Lords, when they collect their £300 per day attendance allowance, cheap meal & wine have any pangs of guilt knowing that many struggle on less per week to feed a family.

 

Our local library is creating a " warm place " . I feel there maybe more who want to enter than the H & S rules will permit. The library has one male and one female toilet I think...enough for the staff on duty but not enough to me warm place needs.
Thank goodness the our outdoor temperatures are still benevolent to not switching on the CH but it cannot go on much longer surely?

Got ours on too...16c but we are committed to overnight storage radiators so we cannot switch heat on and off at the touch of a button.

I've just updated my cashflow forecast based on the latest predictions.

Looks like I might just get by, with literally nothing spare. No budget for house or car maintenance, no budget for holidays.

Sounds like a sob story. It's not. I earn significantly above the national average salary. If I'm going to struggle, how on earth will the millions who earn average or below average salaries possibly get by.
