The first energy saving session is today between 5 & 6pm. We are shifting our cooking to later and going to be switching all appliances/lights etc off, not everything as my daughter is working from home so needs the broadband router and PC, screens etc. We are getting paid £2.25 per unit saved. I suppose if enough people opt in for this experiment it might stave off enforced power cuts.

£2.25 per unit is quite a bit.
How do they work out what you have saved, I mean surely the power you use during those hours is variable.
Is it just electric, not gas as well?

I'm guessing if enough people get involved the amount they pay will come down.
Do you really think we are looking at blackouts with all those windmills we have.

Well, the hook is set. Next they'll train you to eat supper after 7 and breakfast before 7 and preparing lunch or anything during the day will get progressively more expensive.

We didn't get to opt for smart meters. They were foisted on us. And this is how it worked out here.

Households get punished for using electric power through the day so there's plenty left for industry.

Basically you're going to have a power cut between 5 and 6 pm.

Only a voluntary one that we can stop at any time, we can flick a light on or make a cuppa if necessary.

I don't think that's it @pete - I think there is a savings if the homeowner obeys and lowers their usage during that time period but there is a punishment if they don't and that, probably by means of extortionate rates. That's what they did here.

They are taking the average from our usage over the past few weeks (I think 4 weeks) at that time of day. If we save less than the average we get the cash.

Yes only electric. We could cook on gas if we were desperate.

That's one of the minor reasons we don't have a smart meter. :rolleyespink:

They've taken it a step further here, and as usual it's the stick rather than the carrot. The Government gave EDF permission to do away with the two-hour cheap-rate period at midday, until 15th April. As most French people eat their main meal at midday, it's not good news! Even worse, though, is that somehow or other EDF can single out the water-heater in the home for this disconnection. How is utterly beyond me, but OH assures me that the distribution board is still switching over at 12h30 and 14h30 for everything but the hot water tank. I'll believe that when I see the next bill. Big Brother doesn't even begin to describe it! All that to discourage people from using electricity for 2 hours a day :dunno:
They're also pushing the Tempo tariff for all they're worth. I've got friends who are on that tariff, who are prepared to spend 22 days of their life each year wrapped up in thermals, jumpers, coats hats, scarves and gloves (indoors) to save a few euros. They just have to hope and pray that we don't get a really nasty winter.

Hopefully the UK will go down the carrot route rather than switching appliances off behind our backs or charging more at peak times.

It's all about smoothing the peaks. If it results in needing less power stations that must be a good thing, better decommissioned rather than waiting on standby just in case. Got to think positive.

I just find it all very sad that in 2022 we haven't prepared for this and we need to go down this kind of route.
If you had told people 40 yrs ago they would be rationing electricity now, no one would have believed you.
Short sightedness from successive governments have got us in this mess.

And this is before we go all green and all electric like the dopy sods that climb motorway gantries want.
If we got rid of gas like they want we would all be living or dying of hypothermia in the dark.

I am living proof that this is not correct.

Last winter, my last gas appliance, our cooker, reached the end of its useful life. So I instructed our energy supplier to physically disconnect our gas supply and remove the meter.

We don't use 1980s technology to heat our house. Instead, I'm sat on my sofa, lovely and warm, running the far infrared panel mounted on the wall. Its just a picture of some Greek island, except it's not, because it radiates invisible far infrared light warming solid objects like the furniture, and me, without losing heat through convection as the air doesn't warm, being transparent to infrared as air is. The similar panels in the bedrooms have not been on at all this autumn/winter yet, and no heat is lost from pipes, as there aren't any pipes involved in the heating. The living room panel makes our decent sized living room cozy using only 850 watts when on full whack, which it rarely is, because the electronics in it cut the power as soon as the panel reaches operating temperature, which happens within about 5 minutes of switching on, then brings power back on as the panel cools. Because it warms up so rapidly, we don't even bother with a timer. If we're going out, we switch it off, simples.

Hot water is the next thing to go after. It's still on an immersion heater. I'm just waiting til my renovation budget grows back a bit then I'm going to have that replaced with an equally fancy pants modern solution.

All that said, it's just a shame we were all lied to about where our electricity comes from. Eon promised, and still promise, 100% renewable, which is part of the reason I decided to go all electric. Turns out to be a massive lie. I knew the electric all comes down the same wires, but I assumed they were only buying contracts with renewables, which should have meant that gas was gradually less profitable and phased out. Turns out it's just an example of what the yoof refer to as greenwashing.
