I read earlier that those that pay by bill will see about 1% increase. I don't know why. Prepayment customers will also pay more, but those of us on a monthly direct debit will see virtually no difference.

    I don't understand why.

Or, it might be referring to the other discount. Our 67 quid per month everyone gets is ending soon, but this is separate to the energy price guarantee.

Paying by dd is automatic so less overhead; it's their way if saying 'pay by dd and get a better deal!' so they can keep their costs down.
    I think.

As I understand it the £66 ends at the end of March.
At that point new payments will be brought in but they are not telling us who they will apply to or how much at this stage.

That's how I understand it. I stopped my DD and pay monthly straight after I got my fixed tariff but I shall check into it.

I pay by variable direct debit monthly.
Most things give you a discount for paying direct debit.

They said they wouldn't allow me to pay a variable DD and wanted to charge me, in Autumn, £700 per month. :th scifD36:

The fixed DD is based on what you consumed in the previous year. We were in for about £500 per month, that's gas and electric. But like most households we have seriously economised, added more insulation, draught proofed, turned things off, etc. During the summer our monthly bills were less than £100. This month, if this cold weather continues, we will hit £500. Averaged out we expect to pay around £350 to £400. We swapped to variable DD.

We've caved in a bit in our house. We'd decided to only heat the living room, but it's got so freezing in every other part of the house I've switched the bedroom heating on. That will rapidly eat into the credit balance I'd accumulated but hopefully the sub zero temps will be short lived.

The focus is still on finding other efficiency gains. Next on the list is thermal lining paper to cover the remaining walls that still aren't papered, and I've decided to bin my dream of wooden floors. The main bedroom (currently old fashioned floor boards) and the living room and hall way (currently laminate) are getting carpeted.

I've had to bring a thick rug into the conservatory where I tend to sit most of the time.
I put that cushion type vinyl down last summer in place of some carpet tiles, but my feet get cold now with the cold coming up through the concrete floor.
I've always hated laminate flooring, looks like you're in a waiting room or something, it's noisy and cold.

I hate it too. I liked it when we first bought the house. It seemed to fit with my minimalist retro country pub lounge theme, but over the years I've grown to hate it. Apart from the issues you've highlighted, I'd add that it is affected by weather conditions, lifting slightly in places and contracting again depending on the temperature and presumably humidity levels. Sometimes if someone brings in a piece of grit on their shoes or something, it gets stuck under the door and of course you don't know til the door catches it and drags it along with a horrid scraping sound that also wrecks the surface.

I look forward to ripping it out, but I have a few other jobs to do first before I get to that.

As we are both with British Gas I decided to have a chat (Live Chat) with them. They said you must be on the old BG system and they are gradually migrating all accounts to the New Energy system. At the moment that system doesn't have variable direct debit and they don't know if they will be having it. So I asked for them to put in a formal complaint from me about it. I also complained about it when they asked for feedback. :paladin:

That also said "No, you'll not be charged extra for paying On Demand" which is what I do. I send in my meter readings and when I receive my bill, usually within hours, I pay. You can either pay online or through an automated telephone system.

Well i send my meter readings online and they just debit me for the amount.
You were lucky with live chat as when I tried it yesterday I was told to try some other time.

I'm going to end up getting a smart meter I think because the economy 7 meter I have now is completely up the shute, it timing is way off and I really only have it for the greenhouse heating, but I'm paying full whack at night and cheaper during the day.

I just have good old fashioned meters. Don't want any of these new fangled smart thingies. I don't like anything smarter than me around the house (apart from the Mrs) and it's too easy for that to happen  :heehee:

I've never had any problem with Live Chat and they answer pretty quickly. As I don't trust anyone I take screenshots of the conversations. :blue thumb:

When we had the building works done and new windows fitted they didn't use cavity stoppers so we have a small air gap between cavity insulation and around the window frame. Not a huge issue except in the ensuite and kitchen where the sill reveal is tiled and gets condensation above what is the wall cavity.
I'm planning on drilling from outside underneath the exterior sill and foaming just the underside of the frame to insulate it and in theory stop the condensation. Just like retro fitting cavity wall insulation but on a vastly small scale.
Very much non urgent so far t won't be done until it's warmer weather!

I've also found some draughts from around the kitchen flooring where the bi-folds are etc. Does anyone have a suggestion for plugging the gaps? There's a bit of plastic trim to cover the gap which I'll lift and the gap varies between nothing and more than an inch. I'm not using expanding foam here as it will go everywhere!
