Unfortunately I dont think any of this is new, its gone on for years, I think we are told about it a bit more than we used to be but governments have always wasted money, biggest waste usually occurs when governments change and the new one sets about changing and rearranging everything.

I was hoping to get the single-person discount but my wife says she won't leave.

The general rule was, your rent or mortgage should be about 30% of your net income. Going by your figures a nurse on a £32k income should be budgeting on £642 per month on take home pay. How would a full time NHS domestic cleaner £21k manage let alone a nurse in your area.

There are many factors, but when the EU expanded, our infrastructure has not grown at the same speed as the population, also the amount of people owning second homes has seen a sharp increase too. Land owners and building companies know by keeping demand stronger than supply boosts their profits, more for less. Also with interest rates being so low for so long, a good percentage of people have left themselves no buffer as they spend on what they want instead of need.

When interest rates went up to 15% in the 1980s our mortgage was over 60% of my take home pay. I was the only one working with a small family to bring up, we didn't have much left over after paying the mortgage. It seems bad now but when I see couples earning 30k each and running two new cars they will be much better off than we were 40 years ago.

The price of housing has increased exponentially against wages, so with respect the 15% you were paying on a mortgage then was a hell of a lot less than the same now. 15% of £30k is a lot less than 15% of £400k.
Your point is somewhat fair regarding cars, however when we have initiatives such as ULEZ demanding that folks have to dispose of their perfectly serviceable seven year old car... what choice do folks have?

I dont think you can get away from the fact that there is far more to spend your money on these days than there was 30 yrs ago.
One car per family was pretty normal then now its two at least.
A pound for a video at blockbusters once a week, not £100 plus on TV per month.

Everyone wants you money these days, but you have to resist as best you can.

Oh, I agree entirely - however, the facts remain that the basics have become so expensive that they are becoming prohibitive.

Well prohibitive for some I guess,
I see plenty that can afford them, and plenty who cant.
But they seem to sell all the 4/5 bedroom detached properties they build around here.

I may be wrong but it's not so much house prices as the cost to buy a house that is key. Mortgages rates have been at a very low rate (until recently) - so the cost to buy for a £400k house would be £500/month at 1.5% interest rate (not repayment). God help those people if mortgage rates ever get back to the heady heights of the Thatcher years. Repayments jump to £5,000/month! My point is that many people have it tough now, but it's always been tough to buy a house.

I know what you mean Jiffy. Around here Deliveroo bring poor students cups of coffee from costas. I guess they are working so hard they don't have time to switch their kettle on.

Are developers building affordable homes for British citizens or homes with specific buyers in mind, foreign investors.

How many properties in the capital are owned by foreign investors, probably 300k. Liverpool has seen a surge of foreign investors buying residential property. According to real estate agencies, from 2017 to 2021 foreign investors, mainly Chinese have purchased £8.7 billion worth of homes, with 35k homes now linked to Chinese/Hong Kong residents and investors.

They want to maximise profits and have to be forced by councils to add a few 'affordable' homes. What is to stop the first buyers selling them on at market rates in the future. I always thought selling off council houses was a bad idea, it was/is good for each individual that bought their own off the council for a song (and I would have done in their shoes). But it has drastically reduced the stock of low cost housing.
