It was a no brainer then for you to have them fitted, your also with Octopus which tends to give the best rate on any surplus you generate.

I am on a fixed tariff with EDF until Jan 2024, so it really is a non starter for me at the moment. In the near future I will look into it again, but switching my energy supplier would be my first priority for the best rate on surplus energy it would generate.

Also, according to solar energy UK and the National Association of Estate Agents, having solar panels fitted on your roof has been shown to add, none or very little increase in house value.

They probably put some people off. If you install them do it for yourself and plan to stay until they pay for themselves.

Our friends moved house last year to a place with really old solar panels that heated the hot water tank. They had been decommissioned but left on the roof, it made getting a mortgage much more difficult.

I've delayed using my growlamps this year. Normally I would be using them by now for onion, chilli and sweet peppers. To save money the seedlings are indoors on South facing windowsills like I used to do years ago.

Heard a discomforting thing on TV today. If a customer defaults on electricity payments and force installation of a PAYG meter then, if your tenancy agreement doesn't permit a PAYG meter, the tenant can be evicted.

                    Its stupid question time folks:biggrin:

But what happens when they fit a super duper "smart" meter, I only see it mention electric usage, what happens to gas, do they replace that one as well.

I've got an ancient economy 7 meter for electric, but its totally out of sinc and I get my 7 hours of lower priced electric from 9am to 4pm, the reason it was originally installed was because of my greenhouse heaters but now they are running on the expensive time, rather than the expected cheaper rate.

I'm betting if I complain they will force a smart meter onto me rather than just come out and sort this one out.

Where is all this "cheap" renewable electric that the greens keep baging on about, I've not had any of it yet.

My smart meter is actually two boxes, one for gas the other for electric. They fit in the same space as the old meters. Both smart meters have a digital total useage display so essentially they are the same as the old meters but also have a sim card to transmit the readings back to the supplier. The sim card is 'free' and the power used is not on the metered side so doesnt cost me any more.

Then there is an In House Display, a small battery device that can be moved about, this displays current use. The electric use is real time whereas the gas only updates every half an hour or so. The IHD can also show daily, monthly and annual use. It can display either kWh or cost, it knows the tariff to work out the cost. It has a budget feature to flash up a warning if it goes over a set amount, that is pretty pointless.

I don't know if they work with economy 7 but assume they must be able to. My supplier has sent me emails to see if I want to use a cheaper off peak rate for EV charging, so is something similar to Economy 7.

Is yours faulty then @pete as I thought Economy 7 was a cheaper rate overnight aimed at houses with storage heaters.

This is what started me thinking and delving into it.

@JWK , my electricity meter is old and I'm guessing that during power cuts the timer on it has stopped so bacically the clock is wrong and giving me a cheaper rate from 9am till 4pm, my electric use during the day is pretty minimal compared to the overnight use of two fan heaters in this cold weather.

If you shop at Tesco, they do it for you with no extra cost. I thought that now in spring everything starts growing, even my kitchen roll holder seems to have gained extra inches

Boss of Tesco on TV this morning.
Didn't like to come straight out with it but suggested pretty strongly that food manufacturers are over charging and making hay while the sun shines, of course we all know this, but just wonder how much the likes of Tesco are making out of all this.
