    Hi Pete,

Many years ago when i was under my old dentist i had the same problem after one of my visits and all the way home whilst riding my moped i had to keep coughing as i seemed to be struggling to breath due to my tongue being swollen so much. When i went back to see him the next time i mentioned it to him and said that the numbness had lasted for quiet a few hours into the evening before i got the feeling back and he said he had used a new type of Anisthetic or whatever it was they used and it must have been too strong for me and the next time he would have to use a milder one as i was sensitive to it:eeew:

The next time i went back six months later and had to have work done i had no problems and stayed with this dentist until he changed the fact that he was no longer doing NHS work and that all his patients would be charged private rates so once we had a new dentist{NHS} up and running in the village we moved to we changed over and have had no problems with this new dentist and all my injections have been fine aprt from the pain of the injections.

I do hope that by now the numbness has worn off and that you are pain free now:smile:

I don't know if it's a French thing, but my dentist doesn't use injections very often.
I've only had one in the eight years I've been here.
I've had several fillings replaced without injections and have been fine.
All appointments are on time, quick and virtually pain free.
I'm beginning to wonder if U.K dentists use injections as a matter of course.
As an aside, I recently had a root canal done over three appointments. cost 75 Euro. I had the same in the U.K ten years ago at a cost of £600!:thud:

One time I had an injection here and was physically sick some hours later and when I told the dentist he said the same thing.

That was very cheap Mandy, ours charged €200 when t'other half had it done but by UK standards ours is still cheap.

Well Pete- i am a dentist so i'll reply quickly before Ziggy bans me.

First bit of advice is to see you own dentist, after all i could be anyone at all on an internet forum!

To me it does sound like nerve damage from an injection (i'm assuming you had work done on a lower back tooth?).
So what happens next?- the likely hood is that this numbness will be temporary and you may get pins and needles sensation returning in the few weeks time. In very rare cases the numbness may be permenant, but this is very rare. Phone your dentist ASAP to let them know.

      Hope that helps

Thanks everyone, yes tirednewdaddy you are correct lower back molar.
I have informed the dentist but only by word of mouth:), so nothing is really official.
It does seem slightly better today but still not feeling normal, I'll give it a few more days and see how it goes.

I think root canal fillings cost £48 on the NHS, so if you are paying more than that it might be worth looking around, there are still NHS dentists around here.
As to the injections they dont often give you the choice unless the filling is minor and I cant imagine having root canal work without.:eeew:.

Pete, in Bucks our NHS dentist of 20 years went private (as Kandy say hers did) and then when we went to the IoW there was no way you could get an NHS dentist and you were often referred to the mainland ... NOT a cheap alternative with the ferry costs after you had driven to the ferry and then had to get a taxi to the recommended dentist on the mainland ... talk about a joke and a half ... :wallbanging: ... it then became cheaper to go private ... if you could find one as they were so overloaded because of the NHS system it could take weeks to even get an appointment to look at your problem (as t'other half discovered) be you in agony or not ... :rolleyespink:

It's nice here ... I have a problem, I phone my private dentist and can get an appointment that day or the next. To be honest, using the Portuguese standard dentists are about the same pricewise and getting a quick appointment but from the one I went to once their equipment is not 'hi tech' as the private one I use, so I am not casting aspersions here as they were pleasant and efficient.

I had root canal work done many years ago under the NHS and it cost nowhere near the expensive prices as stated on here so i assume that was Private work because if my dentist had tried to charge me £600 for the work i had done i would rather he had pulled the tooth out rather than pay those sorts of prices:ouch1:

The root canal I had in the U.K was done privately as my NHS dentist said he couldn't do it.:dunno: He gave me the address of the private dentist.
The dentist I have here is also private, so the comparison stands.

I may be wrong, but, I think treatments under the NHS have a price system where they cannot charge you *over* a predetermined limit for work. :dunno:

I have just had a new top denture fitted.

However, I had to struggle throughout the process in resisting the urge - and accepted norm - to spend a fortune on dental work and then have them whitened to such an extent that the overall effect looks like I had purchased them in the novelty section of a pound shop.
