But it can be a Bxxxxx to learn properly.

English Is Tough Stuff (Unpredictable Pronunciation)

    Dearest creature in creation,
    Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
    Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;

    Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
    Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
    Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
    Exiles, similes, and reviles;
    Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
    Solar, mica, war and far;

    One, anemone, Balmoral,
    Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
    Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
    Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
    Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.

    Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
    Toward, to forward, to reward.
    And your pronunciation's OK
    When you correctly say croquet,
    Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
    Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
    And enamour rhyme with hammer.

    River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
    Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
    And then singer, ginger, linger,

Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
    Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
    Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
    Though the differences seem little,
    We say actual but victual.

Refer does not rhyme with deafer,
    Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
    Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
    Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
    Science, conscience, scientific.
    Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
    Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.

    We say hallowed, but allowed,
    People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
    Mark the differences, moreover,
    Between mover, cover, clover;
    Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
    Chalice, but police and lice;
    Camel, constable, unstable,
    Principle, disciple, label.

    Petal, panel, and canal,
    Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
    Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
    Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
    Sea, idea, Korea, area,
    Psalm, Maria, but malaria.

Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
    Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
    Compare alien with Italian,
    Dandelion and battalion.
    Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
    Say aver, but ever, fever,
    Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.

    Heron, granary, canary.
    Crevice and device and aerie.
    Face, but preface, not efface.
    Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.

Seven is right, but so is even,
    Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
    Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
    Pronunciation -- think of Psyche!
Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won't it make you lose your wits,
    Writing groats and saying grits?

It's a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
    Islington and Isle of Wight,
    Housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough --
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!

Well, in response to Shiney's point I've started a new thread about the USA Presidency debacle, apologies to our US friends and members, so feel free to voice your, reasonable, opinions.

Wasn't that a french motor from Citroën? I'm fairly sure it was the larger sister of the Axxxx before the change in naming convention when the smaller one become the saxooooo and the larger one the xantiaaaaa.

:wow: I never knew I could've been partaking in possible nefarious activities!! :grimreaper: I always found it a pain to use the site on my phone with Tapatalk, and then the browser wouldn't let me sign in for ages until I accessed via CM security. It seems to be okay now though. That's my reason for being absent these last few months.
Hope you're feeling a bit better @Fern4. :grphg:

I've just had the old gardeners corner browser hijack again.

Between the frequent hijacks and the lack of activity, I must admit I'm getting very bored of GC. Having to mess about with my phone settings to regain control of my browser just to find that not much is happening anyway, gets a bit tedious.

Hmm that's a bit strong n'est pas? altho I must be PC these days and qualify my remarks with, that of course you have your own opinion. However, I for 1 plus some other members spent quite a bit of time, thought and effort to reply to your post about possibly being a bad dad only a few days ago did we not? Maybe our replies made you "very bored", I won't bother again to give of my long life experience.
This is primarily a gardening website is it not?, it's autumn moving swiftly into winter so not much gardening going on of note and I am sorry but there is b all point in me posting that I swept up leaves for 2 hours today. That isn't exactly riveting news is it?:) The great thing about the internet is if you don't like something on it you don't need to "go there" and jog on. I also have my opinion of GC. I find it very informative even tho I have been gardening for over 30 years (you can always learn new things), I have been given great advice on all sorts of topics and above all I have found the vast majority of members to be good fun, polite and caring which is quite something to say in this day and age. To me anyway, these are the reasons I continue to attempt to contribute to GC.

Perhaps that part of your post should be echoed in the feedback part of the forum so its gets the best attention? :dunno: (Or, perhaps you have done so already and I haven't yet hit "new posts"; in which case, apologies).

:heehee: :heehee: :heehee: I do know what you mean ... bit like when you have been going out with someone for a little too long (that could mean friend, not necessarily partner) and you just *know* that there is little to say/hear that you haven't already said/heard and anything new just seems like a rehash of the same old same old :heehee:
                      But ...

                      ... this!

Although ... ... if @silu starts banging on about her leaf sweeping ... be prepared ... I may have to pause being fun, polite and caring and resort to ... :slaphead: ... got to keep these people in check from time to time you know ;) :heehee:

It's our @shiney I feel for: he rarely sleeps and yet remains a regular poster, posting some very interesting facts, (which often get overlooked) or witty comments (again, not often fully appreciated) and yet, he remains upbeat, interesting, interested and I've yet to hear the word bored/boring/tedious pass his lips/fingertips (and, for a wordsmith, he could have chosen from dozens of different words to use! So, no mean feat! :heehee: ).

Maybe you need to either take some time out, or, rethink the reasons why you do visit GC? :dunno: I know you have had some difficulties in finding your mojo on the gardening front; or, perhaps it is the personalities which are not meeting your expectations? :dunno: Or, (and this is not unusual), the darker nights drawing in are having their own part to play in how you are feeling? :dunno:

                      Chin up, Cherub! :cmonhug:

With respect, you have completely failed to read what it is that I am bored of. It's nothing to do with people's valuable input. It is a combination of lack of activity, plus the frequent browser hijack that is plaguing the site, possibly only for mobile users I don't know, but I don't get browser hijacked on any of the many other sites I use.

I'm bored of having to do tech stuff to regain control of my browser.

                        But I've already said that.

I'm also a bit bored of people taking stuff out of context and taking the huff. I don't think I've ever insulted anyone on here, but I've been accused of it plenty of times. In this instance I offered my objective opinion as to one possible reason for the lack of forum activity that this thread, not started by me, is about.

Life is too short and too valuable to be explaining ones self in between browser hijacks.

                          .
Point 1: Forum activity is a responsibility which falls to *all* members; however, life does get in the way a bit and you cannot force people to a) be active; or b) actively answer an active persons posts; or c) be *able* to answer queries if they lack experience/knowledge. There is an argument that the forum A-Team's *role* is to notice lack of forum activity and to jog it along a bit; but, that then circles around to "life does get in the way a bit ... " . :dunno: Which we all understand :dbgrtmb:

Point 2: I do experience forum *lagging* from time to time (and boy is that frustrating!) but, I don't have (at least, I do not believe I have) "hijack" issues; so, maybe that is an issue affecting mobile users only? :dunno: If it is, the question then would be: is it a forum issue, or, a mobile issue, or a combination? :dunno: Posting this in the feedback forum may be of some help (and, as a former member of the A-Team , you would be best placed to know if that would be most effective :) )

I find Mr "M" quite boring at times!
I even find my "children" quite boring at times too!!
I sometimes even find life lacks lustre at times too

But, this too does pass :heehee:

If you want a more active forum ... activate it!!! :heehee:

I can only assume that the browser "hijacks" are being suffered by those using mobile phones, or the like, as I have had no problems whatsoever on either my Desktop [hardwired] or my Laptop [also hardwired]:dunno:. So I think the fault might possibly lie with the mobiles being used in that they're less secure and easier to "hijack". To be honest, I know a lot of people use their mobiles for many media things because of the availability the many apps, but perhaps the convenience they offer is not the ideal secure or reliable answer due to the many issues that a mobile device is subject to.:doh::dunno::snorky:

As most of you know I only have a mobile ( using 02 ) and I have no connection issues. I don't even know what " hi-jacking " means !
