There's a whole discussion about it in site feedback. I'm not the only one.

It's basically a modal message box pops up claiming you have a virus. You click OK and it redirects to a malicious page. You can't leave the page because it too raises the message box. The only way to stop it is to disconnect both wifi and mobile data, click OK, the page tries to redirect but can't because you've disconnected, you get a no Internet connection page which you can then close. You can the switch all connectivity back on.

It's tedious but not too bad if you know what to do, and if your only browsing the Web. If you're in the middle of system updates or any upload or download, you have to start them all again.

That's a shame, but I guess all relationships of all kinds go through a less exciting/interesting/lively times and periods. I had times when work seemed very boring and I could lose interest if I wasn't careful as that would make me less enthusiastic and interested in other things. But somewhere along the line I found some sort of motivation when I realised that I valued the work I was doing as worthwhile and actually made a positive difference to other people and/or work colleagues. Perhaps it's the same with Forums?:dunno:
GC has been quiet for a few weeks but it's not a living entity and relies entirely on the humour, knowledge, curiosity, sociability, and plain humanity of all our members to bring it to Life, their input being the lifeblood that connects every Thread, every Post, on every subject to connect us all. So perhaps, as "M" suggests, it's when pressure of Life, boredom of things in general, makes a Forum seem less attractive than it actually is.
I've never lost interest in GC, partly because I'm able to keep my Life fairly interesting, still working part time as a Consultant for some Law abiding Gentlemen, loving my garden and always ambling around to try to change and improve it, peering through a Telescope on the rare occasions that the skies are clear, enjoying photography and a reasonable social life. But, in truth, the thing that stops me getting bored with GC are the members, their knowledge, their friendliness, their humour, their ability to be there for folk when there's a problem. So GC is us, all of us, with all our differences of opinions, views, ups and downs, misunderstanding of what another member has said, or perhaps airing a view that might offend while not intending to.

Me neither. As is evident by the fact I've been an active member for about 8 years. I even helped look after it for about 2 of those years as you know.

It's why I came back after the first browser hijack and reported it. And came back after the second and third and umpteenth.

But gc roulette gets boring when not much else is going on.

Clearly I'm offending a lot of people by whinging about having to keep fighting malware attacks on my phone when I browse GC, and I have no desire to offend anyone, some I'm going to stop posting for a while.

Actually, you haven't offended anyone as far as I can see, Clueless.:dunno: I think all some people did was to worry and become concerned as to why you had become bored. I hadn't thought you were whinging in any way but possibly you were focusing your frustration of "having to keep fighting malware attacks" on your mobile phone on GC rather than on the mobile.

Absolutely!!:love30::thumbsup::snorky: Without your computer skills, logic and reason we would have had more difficulties during that time than we did.:snorky:

Well, don't be away for too long and hopefully Life will be better for you soon.:snorky:

Maybe "the forum is very quiet" has got a little bit noisier:). Lot of very wise words spoken especially by "M" and Armandii with a dash of humour from Jack Mc, just a great example of why I continue to enjoy GC!

This hijack thing puzzles me . I know virtually nothing about internet viruses apart from the fact that they're nasty things.

Trying to use a bit of logic on it obviously doesn't help me and brings me to the ineluctable (@Zigs - word of the week? :heehee:) conclusion that it's insoluble.

Nobody seems to experience it on computers and very few do so even on phones (from comments made). I've tried to understand the explanation that @clueless1 has given but it seems that switching off solves the problem. Obviously this is very annoying but, presumably, not a seriously disabling intrusion.

Trying to pursue a non technical logic thread brings the puzzle to the fore for me.
                    It only attacks mobiles.
                    Not all mobiles are attacked.
So it appears to be aimed at certain types of mobiles - or the service for those mobiles.
If it only happens occasionally, maybe logging those occasions might help tie it down to when or what is causing it to happen (still not a solution but trying to approach one).

Is there a way to track why it's happening? I guess this has already been looked at and still not solved.

It reminds me of the time when some of the members were having trouble on their PCs/Laptops when only using a particular browser - and not the same browser with different members. :dunno:

All these sort of problems seem to be due to outside agencies or a clash between systems - but doesn't answer why the problem manifests itself in an obviously purposely devised nefarious manner.

This is one of the reasons that I stick to my prehistoric equipment and outdated systems :old:. I realise that this 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' attitude doesn't help people where it is broken  and I feel sorry for those people.

I guess that there must be a solution to the problem but how it's solved is another matter. It depends on whether the problem has been introduced at the source, the final destination or somewhere in between.

                    My brain hurts!

My gardening commitments are only reducing/changing, not disappearing, and whilst a reduction is very welcome after periods of 7 hours a day, 7 days a week, it can actually mean more time for posting stuff.

At this time of year my emphasis on gardening changes from constant harvesting and tending of plants to renewed planting (overwintering onions and garlic), extensive seed saving, tidying up (might sound simple, but a mammoth task consisting of clearing, digging, covering up, etc.), hunting for end of season bargains, getting some homebrew started, re-cataloging all my saved and bargain seeds, finding time to forage fungi and nuts, picking the last of our apples + pressing and pasteurising the juice and planning some lots of new stuff for next year.

And then in January I'll start sowing stuff indoors in propagators and under grow lights.
