Euell Gibbons was one of the few people in this country to devote a considerable part of his life to the adventure of "living off the land." He sought out wild plants all over North America and made them into delicious dishes. His book includes recipes for vegetable and casserole dishes, breads, cakes, muffins and twenty different pies. He also shows how to make numerous jellies, jams, teas, and wines, and how to sweeten them with wild honey or homemade maple syrup.

This was recommended to me this afternoon while I was gardening in my front patch:

It was the Chairman of the local gardening club who recommended it, so I think I'll check out the library :dbgrtmb:

            A Gentle Plea for Chaos
            by Mirabel Osler

In controlled disorder lie planted the essence and beauty of the English garden, the ideal for gardens the world over. In her ability to inspire and evoke the passions and obsessions of gardeners, Mirabel Osler offers a stirring appeal for gardens that have lives of their own, that reflect not so much a compulsion for dominance and regimentation as an intimate understanding of nature's own designs.

              BEE_KIND.jpg

"Bees are vital for the future of the planet; without their dedicated pollinating many crops would eventually fail. This delightfully illustrated book reveals many facets of their lives, including homes, flight patterns, and defense. It also describes how to attract bees to your garden. The lives of bees are interwoven with our own, but how much do you know about them? Which scents do bees prefer? How do bees transport pollen? How far can bees fly? Do specific colors attract bees? Do bees prefer native flowers? Then there is honey?a near-miraculous elixir that in earlier generations was an integral part of life as a sweetener and food preserver. The Bee-Kind Garden provides fascinating snippets of poetry and history, showing how the bee is entwined with our history and culture; it is dedicated to bees and to ensuring that they continue to live in harmony with humans in bee-friendly gardens"
