Back in 2010, I lost my beloved Jack Russell, Tucker, to a liver tumour. About a month later I was in the garden and a black and white kitten came over to me, all curious. He had a little red collar on and his name tag said Chester. He was my neighbour's daughter's cat. He used to visit quite frequently which made the dark days a little brighter. He was forever trying to get into the house and then one day I caved ('cause I'm a sucker). He was into everything to start with but then decided all he wanted to do was curl up on the sofa. He started spending more and more time here so I bought some treats which then progressed on to cat biscuits. In 2016, I got suspicious and asked my neighbour if he was still going back to hers and she said he hadn't been there in a couple of months. It turned out that her daughter had left home and he decided he'd move in with us. Without telling us. He wasn't a cuddly cat, if you tried to hug him he'd push you away like an embarrassed teenager, but he was a little sweetheart. Last year he started to lose weight and when we investigated it, we discovered he had hyperthyroidism. We started him on meds which caused a whole lot more problems than it solved. The meds were making him sick (or so we thought) so we opted for the radioiodine treatment which would cure him for good. In the pre-treatment blood test, his white blood cell count was found to be higher than it should've been. The recommendation was to retest a couple of weeks later to see if the hyperthyroidism was the cause. It wasn't, leukaemia was which is why he had chronic vomiting. Chemo was only a couple of tablets every two weeks and could give him a year more so we started that. He took the tablets with no issue, no side effects and they started to bring down his white blood cell count but even with anti-sickness meds, we just couldn't get his gastro-intestinal problems sorted. In the end, his bloated innards were making it uncomfortable for him to breathe and we tried steroids for a couple of days but they weren't having any effect. Rather than put him through any more, we decided to let him go yesterday. I really wanted him to have another summer dozing in the shrubs but it wasn't meant to be. Our hearts are shattered.

So sorry @Februarysgirl, Chester knew what he was doing when he chose you. Sounds like he was a very special cat. The sadness we feel at such times is the price we must pay for their love X
