Sorry MD and Compostee - don't buy into this at all. Whilst it may be that we are experiencing in part natural climate change, I'm with the consensus that man's effect is making it faster and greater.

If your right - I can get on with my life and not worry that what I am doing may affect future generations. If your wrong................

One good thing - most scientists believe that tipping points will be in the next 10-15 years. So we shall know in our lifetime.

I saw it and found it very interesting. The scientists made some good points that MMD mentioned. These points need to be answered. I am sitting on the fence on this. Only a debate between specialist scientists can resolve this. Unfortunately TV programs (on both sides) just pick out the statistics that support their view. There are usually a lot more statistics that they don't mention because it doesn't support their view.

    http://news.mongabay.com/2005/1124-climate.html

The graph in the link above shows a massive increase over the last 200 years in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The program suggested that man's output of CO2 was small compared to nature's. But they did not make any attempt to explain what catastophic natural events over the last 200 years had caused this huge increase. Even the doubters agree that this is a greenhouse gas and will cause global warming. Again, this is not proof - but it also needs to be addressed.

MD - having planned to watch it - I missed it again. I would be grateful for either a copy or a loan of your DVD.

Should I pm you my address - though you may still have it.

PeterS - wasn't that what the recent global science report did - taking a look at all the information/views and forming a concensu.

Fran, I presume the global science report did just that, but the TV program in part tried to rubbish the report. The program made a fair point that there is so much political spin around that the science seems to get lost.

My gut feeling is that man is capable of screwing up the planet. We are already in the process of doing it by overfishing the oceans. We have used up the bulk of North Sea oil in only 30 years, and it is claimed that man is responsible for a large increase in the number of species becoming extinct.

For all you folk who missed it, the full vid is on this website for all to watch. So I needn't have made that bulk purchase of dvds!

    The Great Global Warming Swindle

Note that it is 75 minutes long!

Note that in the first five minutes it says that there have been times when there were 5-10 times as much CO2 in the atmosphere as now.

MMD- thanks. Thats a brilliant resource, I tried some of the others as well.

I take your point about CO2 levels having been much higher in the past, but then sea levels have been 600 feet higher in the past, and there have been 2 miles of ice covering Britain in the past as well. None of which are very welcome.

I have no doubt that nature can and will create climate changes far greater than man can. The problem is that of time scale. The period of modern man is so short, that we have built cities on sea shores etc based on an assumption of stability. But the climate isn't stable irrespective of the causes.

Glad you found it interesting, Pete, but it wasn't my point, it was the scientist's point! I'm not as clever as that! [IMG]

Thanks MD - I'll go take a look. With regard to C0 2 levels - as I remember the OU scientist responding to the problem, that is not supported by the ice cores that these can not be corelated in real times, due to the natural processes that are involved.

I'll try and get to see it - thanks for the link.

PeterS - I seem to recall someone challenging me and my friends to dienty one thing that man has contributed to the planet. This was in response to man the destoyer. None could be identified for hours - but there was one thing he did that could contribute to the natural world, though not all were positive

We can reverse global warming by covering ourselves in a mixture of saffron and cow-dung. I know this to be true because a man from Norfolk told me.

Seems like this Peter Dirkin who made the programmme has been up to his old tricks again. Last time he edited interviews so that they were misleading and Channel 4 got thier knuckles rapped by the Broadcasting watchdog - they had to issue an apology.
This time he has been using data that is either wrong or out of date. This guy is a serial peddler of bad science....80% of the world's scientists back global warming and i don't think all of them are protecting their vested interests. It is dead easy to make a programme if you suggest a conspiracy - there are loads of people who are guillable or who want an excuse not to do anything about it, or blame someone else.
