I don't think whatever we do will stop global warming, just maybe, it might slow it down a bit, but it's a natural phenomenon. The way these experts are going hysterical is rather OTT and the politicans are all jumping on the bandwaggon and using it to get more tax from us and to gain brownie points for the election.

So, 80% of these 'clever' scientists believe it, that means 20% DON'T.

Most people used to believe the world was flat ........... and we know the answer to that! [IMG]

I think before very long the politicians will have bored eveyrone to death about so called green issues, and will have to get back to talking about the real nitty gritty of running the country.
It suits them at the moment in order to draw our attention away from other more homegrown problems that none of them have answers for.
In the meantime it is a good tax raiser while they can get away with it.
What ever happed to the hole in the ozone layer?
Is it still there? Do we care anymore?
No, because thet've all thought of something else to "sensationalise" about.
I wonder what it will be in ten years from now?

Pete, I did hear or read somewhere that the hole in the ozone is gradually closing - but the 'experts' are keeping very quiet about that aren't they.

Yes! It's shaped like a dinner plate.
The pictures of a round world that we see on the news, in books and in films are just computer graphics. It's all a conspiracy.

Anyone remember "The Energy Crisis" think it was sometime around 1973, the world was running out of oil fast.
Petrol was going to cost a pound a gallon by Christmas and in a few years it was going to run out, long before the turn of the century anyway.

Whats the ozone hole got to do with global warming????...and no they didn't keep quiet about it, the media just didn't think it was interesting anymore.
As for global warming being new or sensationlise.... I learnt about it in the 1970s but no politicians would take it serioussly, cos
to do so would be electoral suicide for reasons that have been exhibited in this thread.
So the energy crisis has gone away has it? So where has all the North Sea oil and gas gone that kept this country's economy afloat during the Thatcher years? why did we invade Iraq when it was obvious that they did not have weapons of mass destruction?
We have got a few centuries of coal left....well countries like India have but much of the oil and gas has gone. Even the arabs know that and are planning their economies for the post oil era.
Saying that most global warming is natural is just simply a way of distorting the truth to mislead the misinformed. Most carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is from natural sources. That a fact and we have always known that. Otherwise the planet surface would be as cold as the moon' at night. However we also know that just slight increases in the CO2 levels will raise temperatures without a need for increased solar radiation. This was tested out when scientists wondered as to why we had warm interglacials in the Ice age that were warmer than today. Sure enoughg icce cores in Antarctica of ice that had been formed at that time showed that CO2 levels were abnormally higher (cause ice traps a sample of the atmosphere as it forms). The reason for thyis was that the Ice Caps had wiped out a lot of the world's forests therefore upsetting the Carbon balance. Eventually as the forests grew and absorbed the carbon the balance returned and the Ice age returned.
As for tax it is not necessary to do with global warming. we don't produce that much oil anymore. The more oil you import then the more it ******s up your balance of payments. If he did not tax fuel then it would be somewhere else. If we want schools, police, armed forces, roads, a health service then you have to raise the money somewhere. If you don't pay it on petrol what would you prefer to pay it on?
Interesting that the phrase "people used to believe in flat earth" has been used. Cause I always used to think that about people who doubted global warming, cause they chose to ignore the facts, or don't want to do anything about it.
Maggie Thatcher used to be a doubter once. I bet she would not buy a house on the East coast of England now.
Good link on this....you have to wait for the second rant by Marcus Brigstock but its worth waiting for, but you will have to be quick ( before Saturday)

What the hole in the ozone layer has to do with global warming is, that it is the "IN" thing to cause panic about.
Every few years we get these panics about various things, usually things that we personally cannot alter, and everyone gets whipped up in a frenzy.
Then suddenly its all put on the back burner and a new panic comes along.
This is just the current one as far as I'm concerned, a few cold winters and they will be back talking about the next ice age, as they were only a few years ago.

I don't think there is any doubt about global warming - whether man is the cause or just a contributory/speeding factor is debatable - though the majority of scientists state that we are the cause. And no I don't think this is scare fad, its been going on for years now - it may be that folk are just starting to listen! Even the Americans!!

Our temperate climate is assisted no end by the gulf stream - which I am told has decreased by 30%. Now if that were change direction or turn off,it could be very interesting.

Bottom line is if there is a possibility or probability we are the cause of a global rise in temperature, or even if we are causing a natural event to speed up or become worse, - then don't we owe it to the people on this planet as well as our children and our children's children to attempt to do something.

Unfortunately I don't believe that there will be global action to address this, or even serious action here, there is not the will either in Government or public. If as predicted it becomes irreversible in 15 years as the planet reacts to the warming - it will be in our lifetime.

Another point of view is: does the maker of the film lock his door when he goes out, even though he doesn't think he is going to be burgled that day? If he does take a precaution, shouldn't we?

Fran, if the gulf stream has decreased by 30% why aren't our winters colder?
Anyway the effects of the gulf stream is ,I would think, quite minor, when talking globally.
If this is really happening, then its a global "problem" and me not driving my car to work, or making life miserable worrying about how much greenhouse gas I produce is not going to make one iota of difference.
For every bit I save someone somewhere will use a bit more.
