    Thanks for that insight, Elaine

Having posed the "Big" question, I guess its only fair that I try to give my answers

Organised religion is not for me and I deplore the intolerance, hatred, wars and cruel persecutions that have been and still are so much a part of mainstream religions. On the other hand, I recognise and appreciate the kindness of simple priests and the good social work of the Sally Army and many others.

Darwinian evolution explains much, but so many bizarre forms of life exist that defy explanation. It almost seems that a mad god/designer has been fooling around

Working in the garden and being passionate about wild life go together for me. Much more so since I have retired and I feel closer to the natural world than I do to the world of work, play and politics which dominated my life when I had a professional career. I strive for harmony and balance in the garden and that brings harmony and balance closer to me [IMG]

    Now,what do I believe in?
1 Nature and the interdependent web of life.
2 The Earth is sacred and I will not poison my small part of it in any way.
3 All life is sacred and I will not take life needlessly.
4 I am a part of the whole and the whole is a part of me.

Maybe that will sound pompous to some, but its how I feel although I can't find the right words.

Sounds like the right words to me Hornbeam, you have obviously given it much thought! Agree with everything you have said on this thread, and put it into words that I could not! ;)

Sanity in a sometimes insane world. When I was working (I took early retirement last year) - I used to come home angry, stressed out or the like at times - and my garden helped get everything back in perspective. A nice healthy dose of reality, as you wage war on ground elder, admire the delicate colours in flowers, and listen to the birds.

And yes I agree with your sentiments in your answer to the big question

I garden because I enjoy it!

No big questions, no analysing, just good fresh air and exercise. :D
