I reckon (from post #68 above) that mine are 2 weeks ahead of yours, I've been giving them a boost under lights in my greenhouse, but now they're sheltering in a polytunnel and will be outside everyday to toughen them up just as soon as these gales stop. I'm in no hurry to get them planted out if that means the roots will be sitting in cold, wet soil with the leaves shredded in the wind.

This will be my first attempt at growing pumpkins. Not even sure what type it is that I planted, but judging by this thread I have no where near enough room :roflol:
They're coming along fantastically ....for now!

They look more like Gourd Squash plants than Giant Pumpkins.

These chilly nights are slowing everything down - I'm hoping next week will warm up and I can get mine planted out.

Here everything is sulking, toms ,Cues and still haven't taken the wind break off my onions. I can't even think of trying to harden off my two pumpkin plants with this rotten wind:gaah:

I've only done it this year Joolz for my Kelsaes because with the gales here I doubt they'd have stood a chance:rolleyespink: For once in my life I actually left the planting out of things late or should I say the right time but you still can't win sometimes:rolleyespink:

I planted two of mine out yesterday, smaller than I would have liked but they are at least under cover in a mini hoop house, I will plant a third one out either today or tomorrow.

The only positive thing I can say at this point is that they are still green! My season thus far has been terrible, it can only get better.

                    Steve...:)

Did anyone see Beechgrove Garden last week? They are growing giant pumpkins this year too and in last weeks show Carole showed us two plants a normal Atlantic giant plant and a plant grown from the Paton twins UK record seed.

They have both plants growing in what looks to be a small open ended polytunnel. I emailed the show and sent some photos to show how quickly the plants grow if and when they take off and suggested there would not be enough room in that ickle tunnel.

I had a reply to say that if they do take off they may reduce to TWO PLANTS only then treat the tunnel as a cloche and allow the vines to scramble outside of the tunnel.

                        Steve...:)

I noticed that Steve and although I'm a total novice in Pumpkin growing I was surprised to see how they planted theirs...my little patch is far too small to grow a pumpkin properly but I'll keep giving it a go , I wouldn't advise it to others to do the same if they want a giant and I did think on Beechgrove they crammed them in in a very tight space:rolleyespink:

Down to 4.6 deg C at my plot last night in the small hours and 5.3 in my garden. Thursday 11th looks like planting out day but will still be protected by windbreaks with something over the top overnight until it's a bit warmer.
