Ah, the same as a lot of paints now sadly.

Table saw sorted. Sometimes it isn't what you know, but who you know ;)

Oooh, now you have got my old gears going. I like the idea of a foot - not sure how I would achieve that as the slabs that are there are not wholly level (near as dammit mind you) but they rise away from the step toward the slate area and then it all slowly falls away after that. There may actually be more strain when the gates are open than when they are closed though, so I am wondering if I can use some of the offcut bits to make something to foot/support them whilst they are open (bulk of the year to be fair) - in the food for thought zone.

I also like your idea of mixing the L and T plates to make things more rigid - I don't expect that there is going to be much in the way of use or abuse, and given the size of the dogs this whole thing is now overkill compared to the current stuff - - but, I also don't really want to be doing it again.

Ah, the top one of those was my initial idea. Given the time of year, however (and the fact I am a lazy git) @pete's idea of the plates does have a certain appeal

Tiny little bit of progress here today - I battered in the ground spikes for the posts either side of the gate and lobbed in a couple of the lengths of timber to let me measure the hole for the gate, which is 1570mm wide from the inner edge of the timber on one side to the inner edge of the timber on the other side.

Now, the question I have is - how much of a gap is needed between the side edge of the gate and the post, and how much of a gap is needed between the gates themselves, to allow them to open and close? Would it be fair to take it as a 1500mm overall width (so 750mm wide for each gate) and allow 35mm around each gate for swinging room?

The height of the gates will be 1000mm dead.

I'd probably go for around 6 to 8mm on the hanging sides and about 12mm in the middle, the middle gap will open and close as the wood swells and shrinks but the hanging side gaps will less so.
But bear in mind I was a joiner not a fencing erector, so might be working to too finer tolerances.:roflol:

You also have to bear in mind that I am ham-fisted with zero knowledge of working with wood....

              Progress!

These will need creosoting (I will do this later this week hopefully) before the hardware and wire mesh is fitted. Quite pleased how these have turned out so far.

Please excuse the mess, the garden is still very much upside down... but, at least we now have a fence and gates!
