The Tomato Growing Thread 2019

I have been unable to log on for a few weeks, do not know why. just an update on my progress.

Sounds like Buffalo Heart. It has a pinkish red skin, very few seeds and isn't too acidic if its that one

 

I'll try and find some pics. It has only about 4 or 5 fruits per truss, biggest on first bloom, then reducing in size. Unlike most beefsteak tomatoes, mine have never produced fused blossoms (AKA megablooms), so have never produced the occasional multi-lobed tomato.

 

What a difference after 11 days! (when they were first true leaf seedings transplanted into 40x cells (the deep ones from B&M).

Every plant has been potted on from cells into 60mm dia. flexi-pots (AKA breeder pots), many of them have been further potted on into 60 x 60 deep square pots, and some of those are ready for potting on again into 75mm deep round pots.

I've even got flower buds on some plants. Only lost 4 plants to being blind, runts or failing to make a decent root system. As other stuff gets moved into polytunnels, I'll now have room for 2 'shifts' a day for them under lights.

Despite being a beefsteak tomato, I've never had one produce a 'megabloom' (AKA fused blossom), just standard, but very large blossoms.

 

Mine still look pitiful but will perk up once pricked out, potted on and in the greenhouse once the weather improves.

 

They are redder than the ones I sow but a similar shape (no creases around the tomato.

 

Hi folks

I've decided on Outdoor Girl, Garden Pearl, Moneymaker, Manx marvel (thanks @Spruce) Terenzo and Romello. They're being grown outside and some in a blowaway.

 

14 Days after pricking out as tiny seedlings just at first true leaf stage (14 days after sowing), these are the biggest, boosted under growlights, and potted on using Jack's Magic:

Just taken the plunge and ordered 12 bags of Dalefoot wool compost for tomatoes. I used their wool compost in hanging baskets last year and amazingly, most of the plants in there have survived the winter! I’ve also been really impressed with their Lakeland Gold as a soil improver on my heavy clay last year. Eye wateringly expensive but I reckon that it’ll probably be good enough to use again the following year with some minor amendments and even when it’s spent, it’ll make a lovely soil conditioner!

 

4 Weeks tommorow since pricking out my tomato seedlings (2 weeks after sowing) into 40x cells, and most are now in 80mm square pots and about 30 in 125mm dia pots, with those all being about 400mm high.

I attribute their rapid growth to use of growlights and Jack's Magic compost, their root systems are filling the pots right up to the top of the compost.

I've got enough plants to risk transfering lots to polytunnels at my plot and risk losing them all to cold temps, and will start shifting some on Monday. I can always bring them back home.
