They are in kitchen rolls, so they'll have a long root run.

With bog roll tubes it only takes 2 or 3 days [1] for the root to reach the bottom and cause forking, so get them planted ASAP. That time is from the very first sign of the seedling emerging.

[1] I checked that timing on sowings over several years, the roots extend really fast.

Thanks, but mine have twice the length of loo rolls. They're in kitchen rolls.

That's interesting, I thought I had to wait until May for those? Unless, of course, you are sowing in a greenhouse? I have no more viable windowsills left, hence why I thought it needed to be May.

I start some of my runners (the ones for longest bean competition) a little earlier, but have to move them into 2L deep rose pots for planting after risk of frost, otherwise they'd be rootbound below ground and a tangled mess above ground before 1st June.

Living in London does have one benefit........ we can make an earlier start? The beans have been sown indoors though, in "root trainers" and will be making the trip to the greeenhouse in a week or so's time.

You Londoner's and your microclimate  (or is that another term for global warming?) :heehee:

Thank you, @Vince that makes sense now  I have noticed that, since moving to a more rural location, things here are slower to come to the fore, which also means I need to plant a little later if I want results. Amazing just how much difference a few short miles make really!
