Yes old carpet is an option, it will get wet and heavy though, that was the advantage of the foam sheeting I used to use, it didn't absorb water, but, was very easily torn.
I cant believe that there is no one out there making a frost poofing fabric, thicker than fleece, I'm sure it would be a winner, especially if it allowed the plants to breathe.

As to the proteas, they are very touchy, I still have a healthy King Protea, but only two, Protea Aurea still remaining.
Its a bit late in the growing season now, but I would feed, but only very dilute, it does green them up.

I would try a builders merchant. I am sure they sell something like that aluminised yellow foam. Its a foam sheet bonded to aluminium, which will give it extra strength.

I was thinking it was the 2in thick stuff used in cavity walls, usually rockwall or similar.

Pete - popped into the local builders merchant today. Extratherm sheet is foam with aluminium foil on both sides. a sheet approx 8' x 4' x 1" thick costs about £12.50 probably plus VAT. There is a thicker sheet as well. I also enquired about vermiculite - for my own interest. A 100 litre bag costs about £10 inc VAT.
